Temple of Horus at Edfu, Aswan Overview
A day trip to Edfu Temple is one of the most rewarding excursions from Luxor. Located about 110 km south along the Nile, the Temple of Horus at Edfu is considered one of the best-preserved shrines in all of Egypt. Built during the Ptolemaic period, it offers a rare glimpse of how ancient temples looked in their entirety—with towering pylons, intact reliefs, and ceremonial chambers still standing strong.
It was once the host to several cultural and religious events in Edfu and included a hall of columns and a sanctuary used for rituals and ceremonies. Inside the sanctuary is the most impressive part of the temple: the sacred lake, which was used for rituals such as purification.
Additionally, the temple contains several hieroglyphic inscriptions describing various Egyptian gods and goddesses.
