Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 Day 1: Nairobi to Samburu National Reserve.

After Breakfast you will drive to Samburu National Park. You will drive through different sceneries on the way as well as huge farms as it gets drier as we get close to the beautiful semi-arid reserve with a life-giving river snaking its way through it. You arrive in time for lunch. Later in the afternoon we head out for our 1st game drive in search of the African Elephant, Leopards’ Lions as well as the African sunset Dinner and overnight at the Camp.

A tailored game drive to give you the maximum time and opportunity to explore Samburu national reserve, enjoy the elephants wallowing and enjoying the brown waters of the ewaso nyiro river, Reticulated Giraffes in the landscape, the Spear-horned Oryx, Gerenuk, the endangered Grevys Zebra and Somali Ostrich are some of Samburu’s highlights. It is also one of the best places to see the spotted beautiful cat, the Leopard, birds of prey, the Somali bee eater beautiful woodpeckers’ cheetahs. The area is named after the beautiful Samburu people who reside in this area and they have co-existed with this amazing wildlife for ages. You can visit a cultural village and get to experience some of Kenya’s diverse culture.

You will then proceed to the Ol pejeta Conservancy. After lunch and a brief rest, you will proceed for your evening game drive. This is home to white and black rhinos, a chimpanzee sanctuary and as it is where the Northern hemisphere meets the south you get both the reticulated giraffe and the Masai giraffe, the endangered grevys zebra big cats as well as the African elephant. This is the only conservation area you find the last two northern white rhinos in the world, Fatu and her mother Najin. Sudan the last northern white male rhino also lived here at ol pejeta conservancy in 2018 at age 45 years. Dinner and overnight at the Camp.

We take early morning and evening game drives or you tailor make your day with the help of your professional safari guide in order to suit your interest since this is a privately guided safari. You will meet the two northern White Rhinos and get an exclusive intimate experience with the endangered Rhinos. Other optional activities include; night game drives, lion tracking, dog tracking, behind the scenes with the chimpanzees, livestock-wildlife intergration, virtual classroom, guided bush/bird walk, rhino monitoring and identifications, conservation talks at an extra cost. Visit also the chimpanzee sanctuary and learn more about this creature that we share about 96% DNA with.

We leave after breakfast and proceed to Lake Nakuru national park. After approximately 6hrs we arrive and start our game drive at this awe inspiring park. We search for both the black and white rhinos, lions antelopes, visit the shore lines for the flamingos and pelicans. The Lake Nakuru’s diverse ecosystem offers a spectacular introduction to the abundance of nature in East Africa.
Lunch and Dinner will be at the lodge.

Leave Nakuru early in the morning and head to the Masai Mara with several stops enroute, Reach the Mara in perfect time for lunch and later leave for the evening game drive in search of the big cats of Masai mara, the lions, leopards cheetahs elephants’ rhinos and other species of elephants. The Masai mara national reserve offer unrivalled opportunities for big cat sightings. Check back to the camp /lodge for dinner and overnight.

Full day spent exploring the park in search of the big 5/other predators. Optional hot air balloon safari can be arranged at an extra cost of US$ 450 per person. Dinner and overnight at the Camp. The Mara offers wildlife in such variety and abundance that it is difficult to believe: over 450 species of animals have been recorded here. You will easily see lions, rhinos, hippos, crocodiles, giraffe, wildebeests, zebras, buffalo, warthogs, hyenas, jackals, wild dogs, buffalo, leopard, many kinds of antelopes and elephant. It is in the Mara that perhaps the most spectacular event of the natural world takes place. This is the annual migration of millions of wildebeest and zebra from the Serengeti (Tanzania) in search of water and pasture. Following on their heels are the predators of the savanna- lion, cheetah, wild dog, jackal, hyena and vultures

We have a very flexible itinerary and game drives are tailored to your interests with our experienced professional safari guide. Early morning game drive with picnic breakfast gets you higher probabilities of catching the sunrise, animals whilst they are still active. The morning serenity is just unexplainable, you just have to experience. Explore more of the spotted savannah with its diverse landscapes as to capture beautiful animals, with your lenses. The Mara river where river crossings happen in July August September is the main water body snaking its way through this paradise. Hippopotamus and the Nile crocodile call this home and it’s the best place I the reserve to catch a glimpse of them as they warm themselves in the river banks. Other rivers include the talek river and smaller tributaries like sekenani river. The sand river is another picturesque area at the Masai mara and it is right at the border with the endless plains, the Serengeti. All these as our safari guide explains more about nature as it unfolds right in front of you, getting you the best angles for that shot! After a fulfilling adventurous day, you retire back to your strategically located safari camp/lodge for sumptuous dinner and overnight

After early breakfast we head out for our Last game drive. Capture silhouettes of topi , giraffe elephant or even lucky a male lion silhouette. After an exciting morning game drive, we drive back to Nairobi.

From the moment we met James, the owner of Wild Portrait Safari, we knew we were in expert hands. Over eight incredible days across the Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha, and Amboseli, he didn’t just show us the Big Five—he introduced us to hundreds of other stunning species and the living, breathing story of Kenya’s wildlife. Every day was a masterclass in understanding nature, reading the l (Read More)and, and truly seeing animals in their best habitats and biotopes. What sets James apart is the way he blends deep knowledge with genuine warmth. He taught us where and how to look for animals, how ecosystems connect, and the very real challenges wildlife face due to climate change. His insights made each sighting more meaningful, and his tips on wildlife photography (from light and composition to patience and timing) helped us bring home images we’re truly proud of. Through it all, his human touch—kindness, humor, and care—made the journey unforgettable. We loved every minute of our 8 days, and we left feeling both grateful and inspired. If you’re dreaming of a Kenyan safari that combines breathtaking sightings, thoughtful education, and heartfelt guiding, look no further. Highlights: - Saw the Big Five plus countless other remarkable animals - Clear, engaging lessons on Kenyan wildlife and habitats/biotopes - Thoughtful discussions on conservation and climate change - Practical, game-changing wildlife photography guidance - Warm, attentive, and deeply human guiding throughout - Seamless experience across Masai Mara, Nakuru, Naivasha, and Amboseli Thank you, James, for an extraordinary adventure—we’ll treasure it forever. Highly, highly recommended. ??

Trip to Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya, Lake Nakuru National Park, Lake Naivasha

Just went for 8 day safari with James and Wild Portraits Safaris...it was spot on perfect. Reasons 1.Clear communication and replies always comes very quickly on WhatsApp. 2. Very genuine with suggestions and doesn't do things as a job or formality. 3. James is very knowledgeable. 4. The enthusiasm and passion shown by James was just so infectious. 5. The planning of itinerary takes care of (Read More)all the finer details. 6. They really take care of your focus and they don't try to sell anything you are not interested in. For example we skipped the village visit because we didn't see value in it. 7. Quite flexible and adjusts as things progress.

Trip to Kenya

Everything went smooth and was detailed. Communication was flawless. The experience was seamless and well organised. Our guide Ben was fantastic and knowledgable so we feel we made a friend in Kenya too. James was superb in helping us plan the trip and with suggestions for stay. All in all it was such a special vacation and I can’t wait to explore more of Africa. People are great ! So warm and fri (Read More)endly and what a truly blessed country with so much nature and wildlife. I would highly recommend Wild Portraits and James and Ben for your travel to Kenya.
please be careful while entering the country at immigration - make sure your passport is stamped. We had some issue with this. Can’t complain about anything else. It was beyond our expectations.

Trip to Amboseli National Park, Lake Naivasha, Masai Mara National Reserve, Nairobi

I reached out to Wild Portraits via a safari service website that featured numerous tour operators. Among the competition, James stood out due to his exceptional patience, politeness, and genuine curiosity displayed during our initial phone calls. James swiftly emerged as the singular operator I wished to proceed with, and here’s why: - Having substantial on-ground experience from spending e (Read More)xtensive time on the safaris himself, he adeptly crafted a honeymoon package that perfectly suited my wife and me. - He adeptly navigated our budget flexibilities and constraints to arrange an impressive array of delightful lodges and activities, focusing on maximising our day-to-day adventures, ensuring each day on safari and at the lodges offered a unique experience. - A skilled photographer himself, James's comprehensive knowledge of various reserves and animal behaviours provided him with a distinct advantage in predicting animal locations and optimal times for photography, whether capturing sunrises, sunsets, or other moments. - Our priority was to maximise game time and reserve experiences. James made certain our vehicle was ready, complete with packed hot breakfast boxes, for a prompt 6 AM departure every morning of the trip. - Remarkably patient, he addressed all my queries, irrespective of whether they seemed 'silly' or insightful—from 'what to wear' at safaris, potential places to explore, to the animals we might encounter. In summary, my wife and I enjoyed an extraordinary experience in Kenya, with Wild Portraits Safaris significantly enhancing the quality of that journey. We are eagerly anticipating more safaris and look forward to embarking on them with James and his team!

We just came back from our second safari trip with James of Wild Portraits Safari. We had the greatest possible experience during our 9 day-trip from Amboseli (Kenya), to Tarangine, Ngorongoro, Serengeti (Tanzania) and then to the Mara in Kenya. The full trip was well organized and included so many highlights: beautiful sights, the landscapes, the wildlife, James' ability to find the quiet spots w (Read More)ith magnificent viewing, great accommodations, breakfast in the Mara, horseback riding amongst buffalo, hyena and giraffes, and of course James' great company, his care for his guests and his drive to make the full experience perfect. We are already planning our next visit and will certainly travel with James again. I highly recommend his services to anyone looking for a fantastic vacation.

I have gone on two safaris with Wild Portraits and James M. He does an outstanding job of finding the game and getting his clients into perfect position for photos. The camps and vehicles are all wonderful, and his prices are very competitive. I hope to go with him again sometime soon!
