Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival – Kilimanjaro / Arusha Airport
Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro or Arusha Airport, you will be met and warmly welcomed by our team. From there, you will be transferred to your hotel in Arusha where you can unwind with a refreshing shower, enjoy dinner, and settle in for the night. Later in the evening, a comprehensive climbing orientation will be conducted, along with an equipment check to ensure you are fully prepared for the adventure ahead.
After an early breakfast at your hotel, you’ll be picked up from Arusha (1400m) and driven to Machame Village. Here, you can purchase mineral water and will receive your packed lunch. Depending on road conditions, you’ll either drive 3 kilometers further or begin your walk directly to the Machame Gate (1490m). At the gate, the porters will organize and pack your belongings while you and your guide complete registration with TANAPA (Tanzania National Parks Authority). The hike starts as you enter the lush rainforest, with chances to spot wildlife like Colobus monkeys. The trail may be muddy and misty, so prepare accordingly. You’ll have a lunch break halfway through and arrive at Machame Camp (2980m) in the late afternoon or early evening. Your porters and chef will have already set up the tents, boiled water for drinking and washing, and prepared snacks. A hot dinner will follow, and you'll sleep in mountain conditions that may dip to freezing temperatures.
After breakfast, you’ll continue your climb, leaving the rainforest behind as you enter the moorland zone. The trail crosses several streams and ascends a rocky ridge leading onto the Shira Plateau. After about six hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at Shira Camp (3840m), located beside a stream with panoramic views of the Western Breach and its glaciers. Once again, your porters will have camp ready with drinking and washing water available. You’ll enjoy evening snacks and a hearty dinner as temperatures drop below freezing under the vast alpine sky.
Following an early breakfast, you will trek east through semi-desert terrain, gradually gaining altitude. After around five hours, you’ll reach the striking Lava Tower (4630m), where a packed lunch is served. Weather permitting, there's also the option to climb the Lava Tower. This stretch is often when hikers begin to feel the effects of altitude with symptoms like shortness of breath or headaches. After lunch, you will descend for about two hours to reach Barranco Camp (3950m), nestled in a valley below the Great Barranco Wall. The descent is a key part of acclimatization, and the camp offers stunning views of the wall and the setting sun. Dinner and rest follow as you prepare for the next day’s climb.
Today begins with the thrilling challenge of climbing the Great Barranco Wall, which, although intimidating in appearance, is a manageable scramble that most hikers find easier than expected. Once at the top, you’ll be greeted by views of the Heim Glacier and find yourself above the clouds. The trail then winds through undulating terrain in the Karanga Valley before arriving at Karanga Camp, an ideal place to rest and acclimatize further. Dinner will be served early, allowing ample time for rest.
After breakfast, the trek continues as the trail merges with the Mweka Route, which you’ll later use for descent. The hike to Barafu Camp (4600m) is relatively short, taking about two to three hours through alpine desert. Barafu, meaning “ice” in Swahili, is perched on a rocky, exposed ridge. This will be your base camp for the summit attempt. There is no water at Barafu, so porters will carry the last supply from Karanga. Due to strong winds and exposed terrain, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the camp before nightfall. An early dinner will be served and your guide will provide a detailed briefing for the summit night. Try to get to sleep by 7 PM to rest before the big climb.
At around 11:30 PM, your guide will wake you for tea and biscuits before you begin your summit ascent. The trail heads northwest and you’ll trek over stone scree in the cold darkness. This is widely considered the most mentally and physically demanding part of the journey. After roughly six hours, you’ll reach Stella Point (5685m) on the crater rim. Here, you’ll pause to enjoy a breathtaking sunrise before continuing along the snow-covered path to Uhuru Peak (5895m), the highest point in Africa. After capturing the moment with photos and a quick tea break, you’ll descend back to Barafu Camp in about three hours. Following a well-earned rest and hot lunch, you’ll continue your descent for another 3–4 hours to Mweka Camp (3100m), located in the upper rainforest. Expect fog and possible rain here, but dinner and a deep rest will follow.
After a hearty breakfast, the entire climbing crew will gather for a celebratory session of singing and dancing. This is also the moment to thank your team with tips for the guides, assistant guides, chefs, and porters. After the celebration, you’ll descend through the forest for about three hours to Mweka Gate (1980m). Here, you will sign the park register and receive your climbing certificate. Those who reached Stella Point receive a green certificate, while those who summited Uhuru Peak receive a gold one. You’ll then continue another hour through Mweka Village, where a hot lunch awaits. Afterwards, you’ll be transferred back to Arusha for a much-deserved shower and well-earned celebration.
