Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 Machame Gate (1828m) Finish Machame Camp (3020m) Total distance (approx)10.8km
  • Hiking time: approximately 6 hours
  • Pick up from your accommodation at 8 AM
  • Drive to the Machame Gate of Kilimanjaro National Park (approximately 45-minute drive from Moshi town)
  • Process park fees and crew fees before starting your ascent
  • Day 1 trekking takes you through the montane forest ecosystem of the national park
  • Your guide will show you a variety of fauna and flora, including a high chance of seeing the Black and White colobus monkey
  • Reach the camp between 3 PM and 5 PM (you can go at your own pace, so the time varies)
  • Welcomed with hot water for washing and a nice cup of tea
  • If you have time and energy, there is an option to do a short hike for extra acclimatization to a point 100 meters higher from the camp
  • Return to camp for dinner and overnight stay
  • Total distance (approx): 5.2 km
  • Hiking time: 3-4 hours
  • This day's hiking time is much shorter as it is a steeper route.
  • Following breakfast at 7:30 AM, you will start heading out of the forest and into the moorland area of the national park.
  • From here, you can enjoy a great view of your summit so far and even Mt. Meru on a clear day.
  • After a short break for lunch, you will start to ascend the undulating rocky ridge of the Shira Plateau.
  • Once you reach camp, you will again be welcomed by your team of porters and chefs with hot water before dinner and overnight stay.
  • Optional extra: 30-minute hike to Shira Camp 2 (100 m extra altitude) where you can see evidence of buffalos that previously came to find calcium here and enjoy a great view of the Shira Cathedral (where the third peak of the mountain collapsed millions of years ago).
  • Total distance (approx.): 10.7 miles
  • Hiking time: 7 hours
  • Following breakfast, you will leave camp to start your ascent to the Lava Tower Rock.
  • This will be quite a tough hike and may be your first experience with altitude sickness due to the higher elevation.
  • This hike provides a good opportunity to adjust to the climate at this altitude.
  • After lunch at the big rock, you will descend to Barranco Camp.
  • You will have dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp.
  • Total distance: 6.6 km
  • Hiking time: 3-4 hours
  • This is a shorter day, providing a good opportunity to adjust while still presenting a slight challenge as you begin your ascent up what has been nicknamed 'Breakfast Rock'.
  • The effort is worthwhile, as the view from the top includes Kibo Peak and its magnificent glaciers, while in the opposite direction, you can see Mt. Meru.
  • This day involves numerous ups and downs until you reach the valley, which marks the last point for water along the Machame route.
  • Afterward, head back up the valley to Karanga Camp, where you can relax for the afternoon before dinner and overnight stay.
  • Total distance: 3.9 km
  • Hiking time: 3-4 hours
  • During your trek, the trail will steadily become steeper all the way to Barafu Camp.
  • On the way, you will pass over volcanic rocks from previous eruptions of this volcano and enjoy views of the entire landscape of the mountain.
  • You will arrive at Barafu Camp around 1 PM for a hot lunch, followed by some rest and sleep in preparation for your summit night.
  • Although it can be a little hot during the day, Barafu, or ?ice? camp, truly lives up to its name once the sun goes down.
  • Summit Night:
  • Your friendly guide will give you a warm wake-up call at approximately 11 PM (depending on how well you have fared so far, you may wake up earlier or later).
  • From here, you will start your ascent to the summit.
  • This is the final push to the top, and your guide will take you at a much slower pace compared to your trekking in previous days to ensure you have the best chance of reaching the peak, allowing your body time to acclimatize to the high altitude.
  • Once you reach Stella Point at 5,735 m, you will be very close?only another 45 minutes until you reach Uhuru Peak, the roof of Africa.
  • Enjoy your time here, take in what will surely be your most memorable sunrise, and celebrate with your guide.
  • Total distance: 10.8 km
  • Hiking time:
    • Summit to Barafu Camp: 2-3 hours
    • Barafu Camp to Mweka Camp: 4-5 hours
  • From the summit, you will descend back down to Barafu Camp, where you will be welcomed by the rest of the crew and enjoy a short break and breakfast.
  • You can take a nap for a couple of hours if you wish, depending on the time you arrive.
  • From Barafu Camp, you will make your way down to Mweka Camp, passing from desert to moorland terrain.
  • You will reach Mweka Camp at approximately 5 PM, where you will have dinner and overnight accommodations.
  • Total distance: 8.5 km
  • Hiking time: 3-4 hours
  • Route: Passing through the montane forest, similar to your first day of trekking
  • Destination: Mweka Gate, where you will sign out and exit Kilimanjaro National Park
  • Transportation: You will be picked up by our company transport
  • Return: Transferred back to our office in town
  • Certificate: You will be presented with your certificate
  • Final stop: Return to your hotel for a well-deserved rest
