  • Kandy: Often referred to as the hill capital of Sri Lanka, Kandy offers a diverse variety of experiences to its visitors ranging from history, culture and simple scenic beauty coupled with a touch of urbanity. It was the last Sinhalese Kingdom that fell under British rule in 1815. The journey to this mellow weathered city can be quite enjoyable, particularly by train owing to the scenic delights that lie alongside. The city?s colonial architecture has been preserved well even in the backdrop of rapid urbanization. Close to the city?s center is the prime landmark - Sri Dalada Maligawa that houses the sacred tooth relic of Buddha. Apart from the ancient monuments of the Kandyan era, the delightful jumble of antique shops and the bustling market in the city also make up for interesting places to visit.

This is also the very centre of the Tea Growing regions of the island. The golf club of Nuwara Eliya has an excellent 18-hole course.
  • Hakgala Botanical Garden: Situated at an elevation of about 1745 m above mean sea level, Hakgala Botanic Gardens, about 28 hectares in extent, lie under the shadow of the Hakgala Rock (meaning ?Elephant?s jaw rock?). This massive rock towers to a height of about 2,200m behind the gardens and the surrounding forest reserve like a solitary giant. The gardens take the shape of several terraces upon the lower slopes of the rock and face the Uva Valley, across which some magnificent views of the Madulsima and the Namunukula range of mountains are seen in the distant landscape. The climate of the Gardens is subtropical, cool, fresh and somewhat similar to an alpine atmosphere. The temperature ranges from 3°C to 15° C. While the lowest recorded was 3° C. The flora of the gardens is distinctly sub-tropical and consists of representatives of the indigenous, montane flora intermingled with those introduced from other subtropical countries, systematically planted in various sections of the gardens.

If it is raining it can take up to 60 days before the turtles emerge from the eggs. They are then placed in the tanks and for the first 3 days remain without food to cleanse them of material ingested from the eggshell. They are then given small pieces of fish for a further 7 days. Learning to dive down into the tank to take the food. When they can do this, they can be safely released into the sea where they can fish for themselves on the coral reefs.
