Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 Nairobi - Amboseli National Park

Your adventure begins early as you depart Nairobi and head south towards Amboseli National Park. Enroute, enjoy scenic stops for landscape photography and coffee breaks. Arrive at Sentrim Amboseli in time for lunch and some rest after the 4 to 5-hour drive. In the afternoon, embark on your first game drive in search of Amboseli’s iconic elephants and other wildlife. Capture the golden hour with silhouette photography featuring Mount Kilimanjaro as a stunning backdrop. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

After breakfast, set out to explore Amboseli National Park. Famous for its large herds of elephants and views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the park also offers the chance to see cheetahs, lions, hippos, zebras, gnus, gazelles, and prolific birdlife around the swamps. With flexible timings tailored for families and photography, the day is yours to enjoy the landscapes and wildlife sightings. Return to your lodge in the evening for dinner and an overnight stay.

Post breakfast, drive towards Tsavo West National Park. Enjoy a game drive enroute and arrive at your lodge for lunch. Later in the afternoon, visit the fascinating Mzima Springs, a crystal-clear water source filtered naturally by volcanic rock. From a submerged viewing platform, observe aquatic life including fish and Nile crocodiles. Continue to the volcanic Mashetani Lava Flow and explore the park's diverse wildlife, including monitor lizards, leopards, lions, buffalos, elephants, and more. Return to Kilaguni Serena Lodge for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast, depart for Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary through Tsavo West. This conservancy spans 28,000 acres and is rich in biodiversity, with acacia and commiphora-dominated habitats. Arrive at Salt Lick Lodge in time for lunch. The unique stilted lodge overlooks a busy waterhole frequented by elephants and other animals, with great viewing from an underground hide. Enjoy an afternoon game drive through the sanctuary, then return for dinner and overnight stay.

Enjoy a morning game drive as you exit Taita Hills and journey to Tsavo East National Park. Check in to your camp or lodge and have lunch. In the afternoon, explore the vast, semi-arid landscape known for its iron-rich red soil. Tsavo East is home to the iconic red elephants, lions, leopards, and cheetahs. Spend the evening chasing the magical African sunset before heading back for dinner and overnight.

This day offers flexibility for morning and evening game drives, allowing you to tailor your experience. Tsavo East is Kenya’s largest conservation area, housing rare species like the hirola antelope, along with zebras, dik-diks, and other antelopes. Visit the Galana River and the dramatic Lugard Falls, followed by a stop at Mudanda Rock—a massive inselberg that acts as a natural dam and wildlife haven during the dry season. Return to Ashnil Aruba Lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

After breakfast, head to the Emali Train Station for your journey to Mombasa. Upon arrival, a transfer will take you to Southern Palm Beach Resort in Diani. Check in and relax for your beach holiday. Enjoy the warm hospitality and ocean breeze for the next three nights.

Spend your day exploring Diani Beach. For the adventurous, snorkelling and diving trips to vibrant coral reefs are available (at an extra cost). Boat trips to nearby islands offer excellent views of marine life and pristine waters—perfect for water lovers.

Another day to relax or explore. Enjoy beach activities like swimming, kite surfing, or horseback riding along the shore. You can also opt for excursions to Shimba Hills for a wildlife safari or visit the Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park. Other activities include dolphin watching, sunset cruises, spa treatments, or exploring Mombasa’s historic Old Town (at extra cost).

After breakfast, check out of the hotel. Depending on your travel plans, you’ll be transferred to the airport or your next destination. This marks the end of a thrilling safari and a relaxing beach holiday in Kenya.

Cancellation Policy

1. Payment, Cancellation & Refund Policy

  • A deposit of at least 40% of the total booking value is required to confirm your safari. The exact deposit amount may vary based on the tour type and will be communicated before booking.
  • Upon receiving your deposit and confirming your booking, we will send a Booking Confirmation Email along with a Travel Voucher. This will act as the official agreement between you and Wild Portraits Safaris.
  • The balance payment must be cleared by the due date mentioned in your voucher. Failure to do so may result in the cancellation of your booking.

Cancellation Charges:
If you cancel your booking, the following charges will apply on the amount already paid:

  • 45% of the total cost if cancelled between 60 and 45 days before arrival.
  • 60% of the total cost if cancelled between 44 and 30 days before arrival.
  • 100% of the total cost if cancelled within 30 days of arrival or later.

2. Changes to Your Booking

  • Once your booking is confirmed, any request for changes—such as altering the itinerary or rescheduling to an earlier date—will be considered based on availability.
  • Additional costs may apply depending on the changes requested, which will be added to your original safari price.

Best safari trip ever!

We just came back from our second safari trip with James of Wild Portraits Safari. We had the greatest possible experience during our 9 day-trip from Amboseli (Kenya), to Tarangine, Ngorongoro, Sereng (Read More)eti (Tanzania) and then to the Mara in Kenya. The full trip was well organized and included so many highlights: beautiful sights, the landscapes, the wildlife, James' ability to find the quiet spots with magnificent viewing, great accommodations, breakfast in the Mara, horseback riding amongst buffalo, hyena and giraffes, and of course James' great company, his care for his guests and his drive to make the full experience perfect. We are already planning our next visit and will certainly travel with James again. I highly recommend his services to anyone looking for a fantastic vacation.

He is a p (Read More)erfect guide, professional, empathic and with never ending patience. Our gamedrives started befor sunrise and ended after exciting hours late in the evening. James has a great knowledge of the animals, the nature and culture as well. I was impressed of his amazing respect for the wild life. This was the cause for intense moments close to wild animals in their natural habitat. Apart from this his photographic expertise provided unique motives. I left Kenia with beautiful pictures in my hart and a well filled memory card. Thousand thanks from the bottom of my heart.

The Best Kenyan Safari

I have been on multiple photography tours, both to Africa and other places, and let me just say that the photography tour that I just took with Wild Portraits Safaris (WPS) ranks up there with the bes (Read More)t of the best. Everything about the trip was simply spot on perfect. From the very beginning communications, through a need for me to reschedule (my own fault, not theirs), through to the final minutes of the tour...everything was smooth, easy, well-communicated and perfectly executed. I went to Amboseli, Lake Naivashu, and the Mara. I was set up in great accommodations, with special consideration on making sure that we were able to get out into the field in the shortest amount of time. A few things that set WPS apart from other tours. First is the ability to personalize the tour to your interests. Unlike other safari tours with set schedules and specifically timed-itineraries, just let James, the owner/driver/ tour guide, know your interests and he'll continually plan and look out for opportunities and present options to you. For me, he knew I was interested in experiencing as much as possible, so he made sure that we had all day game drives while in the Mara. Second is the fact that James is an excellent photographer, himself. That means that he is constantly looking for the perfect lighting, angle, and composition to hep you get your best photos. Third, you cannot find any tour guide with as much passion for his job. This has led him to learn as much as possible about the land, the conservation efforts, the animals and how all of the factors integrate with each other. Each day wasn't just a photo tour: each day was an immersive learning experience. You definitely can't find a tour company that tries as hard as WPS to make sure that you get every ounce of opportunities in the short time that you are there. For instance, he added an impromptu visit to Nairobi National Park, because I had a lot of extra time before my outbound flight. And lastly, James is an extremely nice person. If you go on safari with WPS, you'll leave with tons of photos, memories, and a friend. I've already planned my next trip with WPS.

I spent five days photographing in Amboseli NP and five days in the Masai Mara NR with James Muchina and Wild Portraits Safaris in January 2025. He also coordinated and organized a four day gorilla tr (Read More)ekking adventure in Rwanda for me. I started planning this trip about six months in advance and was so impressed with his prompt replies to my many questions and clear communication. Once I arrived it quickly became obvious that James is very experienced, prepared, thoughtful, energetic, enthusiastic and always on time (early actually). He has outstanding knowledge and years of experience with wildlife behaviour, ecology and conservation biology and I enjoyed our regular conversations about these topics. He has an outstanding ability to read animal behaviour, know what they will do next, and position you to photographically make the most of the available light, the subject, the landscape and composition. He’s always watching these variables and repositioning when necessary to keep you in the best possible position. James and Wild Portraits Safaris organized the perfect trip for me and I always felt safe and comfortable. He is such a nice, professional, thoughtful person that he quickly became more of a friend than a guide. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend his services and I can’t imagine travelling his part of the world with anyone else.

This is a FIVE STAR review for James at WILD PORTRAITS SAFARIS. We booked a 12 day safari with James to Kenya from the UK (via email & whats app) James arranged our transport in a very comfortable p (Read More)rivate Toyota Land cruiser, all our park fees, full board in 4 & 5 star loges within all the parks and collection from and return to Nairobi prior to and after our safari. We visited and stayed in the parks in the following accommodation: Tsavo East - Aruba Lodge Tsavo West - Kilaguni Lodge Amboleli - Serena Lodge Lake Naivasha - Sopa Lodge Lake Nakuru - Sopa Lodge Masai Mara - Loyk Camp All were discretely nestled in the parks surroundings and beautifully lit at night. All were fully sustainable with solar & natural water resources. All rooms were ensuite, providing everything you could need from tea and coffee making facilities to hair dryers. All had wonderfully comfortable beds and ceiling fans. The food was buffet style, varied and plentiful with an egg and pancake stations at breakfast. ALL the staff were extremely polite and friendly. Drinks were very reasonably priced with a beer and wine together costing $5 From the outset and throughout our 12 days on safari James has exceeded all our expectations and gone that extra mile on numerous occasions. James is an outstanding professional, a knowledgeable conservationist, a lover of the Kenyan wild life and now a life long friend. Where ever you are in the world book with James. I recently completed my second safari adventure to Kenya. James Muchina at Wild Portraits Safari’s was the guide for both trips. It’s hard to imagine a better experience. The enthusiasm and knowle (Read More)dge that James brings to the safari is amazing. His passion for the work and desire to share that with others makes him truly special. More than just a safari driver, James is a natural teacher. His understanding of the complete interdependence of the environment, climate and all the creatures you’ll encounter on your safari are educational and incredible. He brings to life the web of life! One special thing of note: safari environments can get very crowded. The number of vehicles surrounding a lion, elephant, etc can be quite distracting. Because of James experience, we enjoyed numerous opportunities where we were the only ones present to enjoy incredible wildlife viewings. Those are the memories I will remember most. A memorable and thrilling experience in Kenya I had the opportunity to take an 8-day trip to Kenya with Wild Portraits Safaris, and I must say it was one of the best decisions of my life. I visited three different national parks: Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, and Masai Mara, and each one had its own unique charm and beauty. Amboseli National Park The first stop of the trip was Amboseli National Park, where I witnessed the majestic sight of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. The park is home to hundreds of elephants, as well as zebras, giraffes, wildebeests, and many other animals. I was lucky enough to see a large herd of elephants crossing the road right in front of our vehicle, and it was a breathtaking moment. The park also has a variety of birds, such as flamingos, pelicans, and storks, that add color and life to the landscape. Lake Nakuru National Park The second stop of the trip was Lake Nakuru National Park, which is famous for its pink flamingos that cover the lake's shore. The park also has a rich diversity of wildlife, including rhinos, lions, leopards, buffaloes, and hyenas. I was thrilled to see a rare sighting of a black rhino and white rhinos, which is one of the most endangered animals in the world. Masai Mara National Reserve The last stop of the trip was Masai Mara National Reserve, which is the ultimate destination for any wildlife lover. The reserve is part of the Serengeti ecosystem, and hosts the annual migration of millions of wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles, who cross the Mara River in search of greener pastures. The reserve is also the best place to see the Big Five: lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffaloes. I was fortunate enough to see all of them, and even witnessed a dramatic chase between lions and buffalos. The reserve also has a rich cultural heritage, as it is the home of the Masai people, who are known for their traditional lifestyle and colorful attire.
