Patuxai History & Significance

Patuxai translates to 'The Victory Gate' in the local language. The monument is also called by different names - Patuxay, Patousai and Patusai, all referring to the same meaning. It was constructed in the 1960s with cement, which was donated by the USA for the construction of Vientiane International Airport. It is nicknamed as a 'vertical runway' for this reason. The monument could not be immediately completed due to the lack of funds, but the government and people contributed to its completion in the 1990s.

Architecture

A Laotian architect-designed Patuxai. Its architecture and style resemble Arc de Triomphe located in Paris in France. But the symbolism is more related to Laotian culture. The five towers of the monument represent the five Buddhist principles of peaceful coexistence - flexibility, honesty, honor, prosperity and thoughtful amiability.

Gateways, towers and observation deck at the top

There are four gateways on all four directions. In front of each gate is a pond forming the shape of a lotus. The four corners of these gateways are decorated at the top with Naga finials. The east gate is the most popular of all and is the venue for national parades and ceremonies. The arch consists of seven floors, which can be reached by two concrete stairs. These floors house souvenir shops, restaurants, cafes and even offices.

A large central tower dominates the roof, which is painted in gold. Four towers on each side surround this tower, which are adorned with flower motifs. The interiors of the central arch are colourfully decorated with paintings depicting scenes from Laotian Buddhism.

A spiral staircase leads to the observation tour on the seventh floor, from where you can see stunning views of Vientiane city and the Mekong river.

In front of the monument,  there is a well-maintained Patuxai park, which is a popular hangout among the locals in the evenings and on the weekends.
