"Pyramids of Assam"

Charaideo, Sivasagar Overview

Popularly known as the ‘Pyramids of Assam,’ Charaideo Maidam is a historical tourist destination at the foothills of Nagaland. The founder of the dynasty, Chaolung Sukhapa, constructed Charaideo as the initial capital of the Ahom rulers in about 1229 CE. The place is best known as the home of Ahom’s ancestral Gods. The large collection of maidams, tumuli, and burial sites of the Ahom kings and queens and other rulers is what makes the area most famous.

Despite the fact that the capital was shifted several times during Ahom's 600-year reign, Charaideo remained an emblem of Ahom dominance. When compared to the Pyramids of Egypt, the 42 tombs of Ahom kings and queens at Charaideo mounds are amazing structures and are a marvel to see. These tombs show the exceptional construction and craftsmanship of Assamese sculptors and masons throughout the Middle Ages. Earlier, Charaideo was thought to be the birthplace of the god "Lankuri," also known as Lord "Shiva."

The biggest appeal of this location is its burial vaults, which portray a plethora of information about the Ahom emperors' lifestyles and traditions. The great architectural feature of the tomb is the octagonal dwarf that encircles the whole tomb. The flowery design created on the underground vaults and the chambers completely covered with clay mounds is enough to captivate you. There is a neighboring park called Sukapha Park that has several amusement activities for children.

Historical Importance of Charaideo Maidam

Charaideo Maidam illustrates the late medieval mound tomb of the Tai Ahom people of Assam. Out of 386 maidams that were discovered in the past, only 90 royal burials are finely conserved. These burials are regarded as showcases for the Ahoms' mound burial tradition. The Charaideo Maidams keep the mortal remains of Ahom nobility, who were buried with their accessories because they believe in the afterlife. Eventually, Ahom monarchs started using the Hindu cremation practice after the 18th century. They started burying the cremated remains and ashes in the Maidams.

Currently, the Archaeological Survey of India and the State Department of Archaeology are in charge of managing and protecting the Maidams according to the provisions of the Assam Ancient Monuments and Records Act 1959 and the Ancient Monuments and Sites Act 1958, respectively. On January 23, 2023, the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced that the Center had nominated the Ahom Kingdom in Charaideo to submit a nomination for being a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
