The Lhuntse Dzong was originally built Pema Lingpa's son Kuenga Wanpo in 1543. But it was only in 1654 that the Trongsa governor also known as penlop Minjur Tenpa built the complex into a dzong as we know it today. The building has gone many renovations in the past, the most important one when it was hit by Assam earthquakes in 2009. The dzong is also the ancestral home of the house of Wangchuck, the ruling family of Bhutan.
