Agatti Islands, Lakshadweep Overview

Agatti Islands is considered another jewel from the Lakshadweep group of islands in India. The island is situated on one of the coral isles of Lakshadweep islands and is few of the islands from the Lakshadweep group that is inhabited by people. One may explore the island on foot or rent a two-wheeler to commute. Every corner of the island is rich with natural vegetation and beautiful geographical formations.

The beautiful Agatti island stretches over an area of 8 kilometres, and it is sparsely populated with around 8000 inhabitants. Agatti Island is the only island belonging to the Lakshadweep group with its airport that makes the island extremely accessible from major parts of the world. The airport is located at a distance of 459 kilometres from the shores of Kochi, India. The locals mostly speak English and Malayalam, and Islam is the main religion of the inhabitants. The primary occupation of the people is fishing. However, tourism is picking up quite well in this region of the world.

Geography of Agatti Island

Agatti Island is a 3.3 square kilometre area island in the Lakshadweep Group of Islands in India. It is situated about 460 kilometres off the mainland of Kochi and about 530 kilometres away from the Kollam Port. The island has a 25 square kilometre lagoon area. The Bangaram Island is the nearest Island which is about 7 kilometres from Agatti. It lies to the North-East of Agatti Islands. To the South-East of Agatti is the Kavaratti Island at a distance of about 55 kilometres. The Suheli Par island is located 77 kilometres to the South of Agatti Island. A small area of about 0.09 square kilometres forms the Kalpatti Island and is located at the southern end of the Agatti Island.

Beaches 
The Island has splendid beaches making Agatti a perfect beach destination. The tropical climate of the Island is apt to sunbathe lying in the clear white sand under the azure skies by the beautiful Arabian Ocean. One can choose to go on long strolls on the beach clad with tall coconut trees in the fresh and unpolluted atmosphere of the island.

Water Sports
Adventure enthusiasts can indulge in water sports such as snorkelling, scuba diving, swimming, kayaking, and water skiing in the beautiful tides of the Arabian Sea. Some may even give Deep Sea Fishing a try. Scuba diving and glass bottom boat ride are incredibly famous on the island. With a variety of colourful fishes, gorgeous corals and unique aquatic animals these activities are worth a try at Agatti Island.

Agatti Islands Entry Permit

An entry permit is required for every traveller visiting Agatti Island. The entry permit application form can be downloaded from the Internet. The duly filled entry permit form needs to be submitted to the Administrator at Lakshadweep Office in Wellington Island, Kochi along with a fee of INR 50 by cash or demand draft. The entry permit needs to be submitted to the Registration Officer or the Station House Officer within 24 hours of reaching the island. At the end of the tour, the order also needs to be surrendered to the Administrator in Kochi.

Best Time To Visit Agatti Islands

The best time to visit Agatti Island between October and March as the weather stays pretty much pleasant throughout the months and the sea stays calms making it safe to explore the island. During summers, i.e. between April and May, the temperature goes as high as 35°C degrees Celcius and minimum 22 degrees Celcius. During monsoons, the island receives intermittent to heavy rainfall.

Stay Near Agatti Islands

There are only two resorts on the island for accommodation and bookings need to be made in advance. This assures less number of tourists at a time and hence ensures a peaceful holiday away from commercialisation and away from the crowd. The resorts have all the basic facilities and luxury amenities like spa, Wi-Fi, Gym, Transport arrangement etc. To enter the island, the tourists require a special permit from the Lakshadweep Administration which can be availed once you show your confirmed place of stay on the island.

2. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited on the islands.
3. Only Indians are allowed to visit and stay on Agatti Islands. The foreign nationals can stay Bangaram Island, Minicoy Island and Thinnikara Island.
4. Airtel and BSNL mobile networks are strong on the island. The other mobile networks have a low range throughout.
5. Carry plenty of cash as there is only one ATM on the island.
6. The locals of Agatti Island are courteous and friendly. So, don't hesitate to interact with them.

How To Reach Agatti Islands

Agatti Island has its airport, the Agatti airport. Daily ATR 42 flights operate from Kochi Monday through Saturday.

Agatti Island is also connected by a sea route. The island is located just 8 km from the Bangaram Island which can be easily accessed by a boat ride. Seven-passenger cruise ships with modern facilities operate from Cochin every day, and they reach Agatti within 20 to 22 hours.
