Monastery of the Assumption of Virgin Mary Hydra

Agios Gordios, Hydra Overview

Right beneath the clock tower on the island of Hydra lies the Church of Dormition, a dominant Cathedral in Hydra also known as the Monastery of the Assumption of Virgin Mary. The monastery is on a hill overlooking the town of Hydra and the Saronic Gulf spread, surrounded by beautiful gardens and olive groves.

Constructed at the heart of Hydra, it was built in 1643 by a nun, however, it was later destroyed by an earthquake in 1774. Rebuilt by Venetian Architects, the monastery is a religious site dating back to the 18th century and a cardinal landmark on the island.  It houses several relics and icons, making it a popular tourist attraction and a perfect spot for visitors interested in the island’s rich history and culture.
