Hogenakkal Falls is a scintillating waterfall that is located on river Kaveri in the Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu. The place gets its name from Hogenakkal, which means 'smoking rocks', owing to the unique rock arrangement that exists around it. The gushing beauty of this cascade is one of a kind and is often quoted as being the "Niagara falls of India". 

The Kaveri River forks into multiple streams and falls through multiple steps, making the sight a mesmerising thing to behold. The carbonatite rocks by these falls are the oldest of its kind in South Asia and one of the oldest in the world. Boating is possible in coracles during the dry season as the water of the Kaveri river is relatively peaceful. The coracles are basket-shaped boats fashioned out of bamboo, with animal hide or plastic sheets for the bottom. They measure 2.5 m across, can seat 8 people and are steered by hand using a single wooden paddle. The river is also abundant in a wide variety of fish which are sold on the banks in improvised stalls.

The hike overlooking the falls is a beautiful sight to behold, and one cannot help but get mesmerised by the verdant foliage and virgin charms of the place. This is somewhat attributed to the fact that a number of herbs and medicinal plants are present in the close proximity of the falls, thereby imparting it their goodness. The best season to visit is soon after the monsoons, when the river is in full spate.
