Museum of Anatolian, Ankara Overview
Set in two restored 15th-century Ottoman buildings a short walk from Ankara Castle, the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations holds one of the world's most important collections of Hittite, Phrygian and early Anatolian artefacts, spanning the Neolithic through Bronze Age. It's consistently rated Ankara's top museum, worth prioritising over the smaller history museums nearby if time is limited.
The Hittite collection includes the letter of friendship sent by Naptera, wife of Pharaoh Ramses II, to Puduhepa, wife of the Hittite king Hattusili III, one of the oldest surviving peace-related documents in the world. The central hall holds reliefs and sculptures from the Phrygian and Urartian periods of the Iron Age. The museum won the European Museum of the Year Award in 1997 and rewards a full hour or more rather than a quick walkthrough.
