Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Shimla - Kalpa

Today pick up from Shimla and our representative meets over there. After that proceed to Kalpa. En route: Kufri, Narkanda, Rampur Bushahr, Teranda Mata Temple, Teranda Dhank (world’s one of the most dangerous road), Karcham Dam and Reckong Peo Market (Distt. Headquater of Kinnaur). On reaching Kalpa, check into the hotel. Once known as Chinni, little has changed in Kalpa in the last 500 years. Legend has it that when Lord Dalhousie wanted to take a break from his hectic schedule in shimla, he would come here on his Horseback. By the side of Kalpa is a 79- foot rock formation that resembles a Shivlinga that changes the colour as the day passes and is visible to the naked eye on a clear day. Dinner & Overnight stay at Hotel.

Today morning after breakfast check out from the hotel and get ready for an adventurous journey to Spiti valley. En route: Puh, Khab, Nako (known for its Lake), Giu & Tabo. When you drive from Nako to Tabo, you cross a bridge over the Spiti River after Sumdo and take a detour of about 7 km to reach a small hamlet called Giu. This is an almost isolated habitation with no other village in view, but what makes it famous is over 500-years-old mummy of a Buddhist monk. On a small hillock just on the outskirts of the village in a small room, inside a glass cabin, lies the mummy of an old monk. The nails, teeth and hair of the mummy appear as if of a living person. There are many theories about how this monk’s body has remained in this state without decay and without the use of any chemicals for preservation. Apparently his body got buried beneath a glacier during an avalanche and remained there for hundreds of years till ITBP (Indo Tibetan Border Police) personnel found it during some road clearance project. It was then brought to Giu and placed here, and a small shrine was built around it. Another theory claims that the yogic posture in which the monk sits can self preserve the body. Whatever the case be, it is no less than a wonder to witness that how a human body has preserved itself for so many years without any decay or chemicals. Tabo Monastery: Perched at an amazing altitude of 3050 meters, Tabo Monastery is often referred to as the 'Ajanta of the Himalayas'. The 10th century Tabo Monastery was founded by the great scholar, Richen Zangpo, and has been declared as the World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The monastery houses more than 60 lamas and contains the rare collection of scriptures, pieces of art, wall paintings -Thankas and Stucco. Check into the home stay. Dinner & Overnight stay at Home stay.

Today morning after breakfast visit to Kye Monastery, kibber & Chichum. Kye Monastery: Kye Monastery is one of the main learning centres of Buddhist studies in Spiti. The monastery is house to some 100 odd monks who receive education here. It is oldest and biggest monastery in Spiti. It houses the rare painting and beautiful scriptures of Buddha and other gods and goddess. You may also find rare 'Thangka' paintings and ancient musical instruments 'trumpets, cymbals, and drums in the monastery. The beautiful village of Kibber, which is located in Spiti Valley and at a height of 4205 meters above sea level, holds the distinction of being the highest Motorable village in the world, This scenic village is situated in a cold desert, surrounded by picturesque mountains, barren landscape, and green meadows. The landscape of Kibber is similar to that of Ladakh and Tibet and the Tibetan Buddhism is the predominant religion here. This is the reason the Spiti Valley is also known as Little Tibet.
