How To Reach Uganda

Entebbe International Airport is the main entry point for international travellers, offering direct flights to many destinations. For those in neighbouring countries like Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, and Tanzania, road travel is common, with immigration stations at border crossings. Travellers can also take boats across Lake Victoria to connect with Tanzania.

Reaching Uganda by Air

To get to Uganda by air, travellers can use Entebbe International Airport (EBB), located near Entebbe town, around 29 miles from Kampala, the capital. This airport has direct flights to 27 destinations in 15 countries across Europe, Asia, and Africa. Airlines like Uganda Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Qatar Airways, Emirates, and KLM offer regular flights to and from Entebbe Airport, making it accessible from various parts of the world.

A private taxi from Entebbe Airport to Entebbe town costs about $5, while a ride to Kampala is around $35. Alternatively, travelers can share a taxi from the airport to Entebbe, then catch a minibus from the old taxi park in Kampala for about $2 per person.

Reaching Uganda by Bus

To get to Uganda by bus, travelers can use international services from neighboring countries like Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and South Sudan.
From Kenya, buses travel from Nairobi to major Ugandan cities, usually passing through Kisumu and crossing the border at Busia. The journey from Nairobi to Kampala takes about 12-13 hours, with stops along the way.
In Tanzania, routes from Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, and Arusha connect to various destinations in Uganda. Additionally, shared-car taxis and minibusses operate between Kabale and the Rwanda border, with minibusses continuing to Kigali.
Uganda also has domestic buses connecting major cities and towns.

Currently, there are no operational passenger railway services connecting Uganda with neighbouring countries.

Reaching Uganda by Road

Travellers can enter or leave Uganda through any of the 40 immigration stations at its borders, including points with Rwanda, Kenya, South Sudan, Tanzania, and the DRC Congo, as well as marine ports on Lake Victoria. They can use private vehicles, buses, or taxis. If crossing from Kenya in a private vehicle, it's essential to note that Uganda's fuel prices are higher.

Reaching Uganda by Water

You can travel between Kampala and Mwanza in Tanzania by a catamaran speed vessel called MV Bluebird, which takes about 3 hours. Alternatively, there are cargo ferry services available, taking around 19 hours between Port Bell and Mwanza, offering a more affordable but longer journey.

To get to Bukoba from Mwanza, you can take a ferry across Lake Victoria. Ferries run regularly between the two cities, providing both daytime and overnight options. Check the schedule and ticket availability at the Bukoba and Mwanza ports.
