Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 Nairobi to Amboseli National Park (Approx 5 hrs)

Leave Kenya’s capital city early in the morning and drive towards the Kenyan coast, with several stops along the way for landscape views and coffee breaks. Arrive in time for lunch at Sentrim Amboseli Lodge. After a relaxing break from the five-hour drive, embark on the first game drive in search of elephants and other wildlife. End the evening with stunning silhouette photography as the sun sets behind Mount Kilimanjaro, with animals in the foreground.

Day 2 Full Day at Amboseli National Park

Spend the day at the royal court of Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro. The itinerary is flexible, allowing for morning and afternoon game drives. Amboseli National Park is the best place to see large herds of elephants. The swamps attract these magnificent creatures in this vast semi-arid ecosystem. The dusty plains are also home to cheetahs, lions, and other predators.

On early morning game drives, there is a higher chance of spotting rarer mammals such as the honey badger, African wildcat, and African civet. Guests are encouraged to leave camp early with a packed breakfast to experience the beautiful African sunrise and breakfast in the wild. Amboseli also offers unique photography opportunities, particularly with the golden light and dust as animals move in and out of the swamp in their daily migration routine.

Day 3 Amboseli to Lake Naivasha (Approx 7 hrs)

Depart Amboseli early in the morning and head to Lake Naivasha, stopping at the East African section of the Great Rift Valley viewpoint. This geologic wonder, a fracture in the earth’s surface, offers breathtaking views. Enjoy sights of Mount Longonot, a stratovolcano with an 8x12 km caldera.

Continue past a small Italian Catholic church built in 1942 during World War II when Italians were prisoners of war, as Kenya was still a British colony. Arrive at Lake Naivasha in time for lunch and a brief rest before the afternoon’s activities.

Begin with a one-hour boat ride on the only freshwater lake in the Kenyan Rift Valley, home to hippos and over 400 bird species. Observe pied kingfishers in action and the African fish eagle hunting for fish, mainly common carp. Later, choose between a horse ride or a nature walk at Crescent Island or Sanctuary Farm. Return to Mwanzo Lodge for a relaxing evening.

Day 4 Lake Naivasha to Masai Mara (Approx 5 hrs)

Depart Naivasha early in the morning for the Masai Mara, making several stops en route. Arrive in time for lunch and later embark on an evening game drive in search of the Big Cats—lions, leopards, and cheetahs—as well as elephants, rhinos, and other wildlife.

The Masai Mara National Reserve offers unrivaled opportunities for Big Cat sightings. After the game drive, return to Enkorok Mara Camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 5 Full Day at Masai Mara National Reserve

Spend the entire day exploring the Masai Mara in search of the Big Five and other predators. An optional hot air balloon safari can be arranged at an extra cost of USD 450 per person.

The Mara boasts an incredible variety and abundance of wildlife, with over 450 recorded species. Visitors can easily spot lions, rhinos, hippos, crocodiles, giraffes, wildebeests, zebras, buffalo, warthogs, hyenas, jackals, wild dogs, and various antelope species.

This reserve is also home to the Great Migration, where millions of wildebeest and zebras migrate from the Serengeti (Tanzania) in search of water and pasture. Following closely behind are predators such as lions, cheetahs, wild dogs, jackals, hyenas, and vultures.

Day 6 Masai Mara National Reserve to Nairobi

After breakfast, depart for Nairobi, arriving in the early evening. Guests will be dropped off at a Nairobi hotel or the airport for their onward journey.

Cancellation Policy

Payment, Cancellation and Refund Policy

You will have to pay a deposit of at least 40% of the booking value for the
booking to be confirmed. Please note that the deposit amount varies based
on the tour type and shall be notified to you before making the booking.
Once the booking is accepted by us, we shall send you a booking
confirmation email with the voucher, which shall serve as a contract
between us from the date we send the confirmation. All details about the
balance payment which is due before the departure date will be mentioned
in the booking voucher. If this balance is not paid on or before the due date
we reserve the right to cancel the booking.
In case of cancellations, the following charges will apply on the amount
paid

· 45% if cancelled between 60 and 45 days prior to arrival

· 60% if cancelled between 44 and 30 days prior to arrival

· 100% if cancelled 30 days and 24 hrs prior to arrival

We just came back from our second safari trip with James of Wild Portraits Safari. We had the greatest possible experience during our 9 day-trip from Amboseli (Kenya), to Tarangine, Ngorongoro, Sereng (Read More)eti (Tanzania) and then to the Mara in Kenya. The full trip was well organized and included so many highlights: beautiful sights, the landscapes, the wildlife, James' ability to find the quiet spots with magnificent viewing, great accommodations, breakfast in the Mara, horseback riding amongst buffalo, hyena and giraffes, and of course James' great company, his care for his guests and his drive to make the full experience perfect. We are already planning our next visit and will certainly travel with James again. I highly recommend his services to anyone looking for a fantastic vacation.

I have been on multiple photography tours, both to Africa and other places, and let me just say that the photography tour that I just took with Wild Portraits Safaris (WPS) ranks up there with the bes (Read More)t of the best. Everything about the trip was simply spot on perfect. From the very beginning communications, through a need for me to reschedule (my own fault, not theirs), through to the final minutes of the tour...everything was smooth, easy, well-communicated and perfectly executed. I went to Amboseli, Lake Naivashu, and the Mara. I was set up in great accommodations, with special consideration on making sure that we were able to get out into the field in the shortest amount of time. A few things that set WPS apart from other tours. First is the ability to personalize the tour to your interests. Unlike other safari tours with set schedules and specifically timed-itineraries, just let James, the owner/driver/ tour guide, know your interests and he'll continually plan and look out for opportunities and present options to you. For me, he knew I was interested in experiencing as much as possible, so he made sure that we had all day game drives while in the Mara. Second is the fact that James is an excellent photographer, himself. That means that he is constantly looking for the perfect lighting, angle, and composition to hep you get your best photos. Third, you cannot find any tour guide with as much passion for his job. This has led him to learn as much as possible about the land, the conservation efforts, the animals and how all of the factors integrate with each other. Each day wasn't just a photo tour: each day was an immersive learning experience. You definitely can't find a tour company that tries as hard as WPS to make sure that you get every ounce of opportunities in the short time that you are there. For instance, he added an impromptu visit to Nairobi National Park, because I had a lot of extra time before my outbound flight. And lastly, James is an extremely nice person. If you go on safari with WPS, you'll leave with tons of photos, memories, and a friend. I've already planned my next trip with WPS.

I spent five days photographing in Amboseli NP and five days in the Masai Mara NR with James Muchina and Wild Portraits Safaris in January 2025. He also coordinated and organized a four day gorilla tr (Read More)ekking adventure in Rwanda for me. I started planning this trip about six months in advance and was so impressed with his prompt replies to my many questions and clear communication. Once I arrived it quickly became obvious that James is very experienced, prepared, thoughtful, energetic, enthusiastic and always on time (early actually). He has outstanding knowledge and years of experience with wildlife behaviour, ecology and conservation biology and I enjoyed our regular conversations about these topics. He has an outstanding ability to read animal behaviour, know what they will do next, and position you to photographically make the most of the available light, the subject, the landscape and composition. He’s always watching these variables and repositioning when necessary to keep you in the best possible position. James and Wild Portraits Safaris organized the perfect trip for me and I always felt safe and comfortable. He is such a nice, professional, thoughtful person that he quickly became more of a friend than a guide. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend his services and I can’t imagine travelling his part of the world with anyone else.

We booked a 12 day safari with James to Kenya from the UK (via email & whats app) James arranged our transport in a very comfortable p (Read More)rivate Toyota Land cruiser, all our park fees, full board in 4 & 5 star loges within all the parks and collection from and return to Nairobi prior to and after our safari. We visited and stayed in the parks in the following accommodation: Tsavo East - Aruba Lodge Tsavo West - Kilaguni Lodge Amboleli - Serena Lodge Lake Naivasha - Sopa Lodge Lake Nakuru - Sopa Lodge Masai Mara - Loyk Camp All were discretely nestled in the parks surroundings and beautifully lit at night. All were fully sustainable with solar & natural water resources. All rooms were ensuite, providing everything you could need from tea and coffee making facilities to hair dryers. All had wonderfully comfortable beds and ceiling fans. The food was buffet style, varied and plentiful with an egg and pancake stations at breakfast. ALL the staff were extremely polite and friendly. Drinks were very reasonably priced with a beer and wine together costing $5 From the outset and throughout our 12 days on safari James has exceeded all our expectations and gone that extra mile on numerous occasions. James is an outstanding professional, a knowledgeable conservationist, a lover of the Kenyan wild life and now a life long friend. Where ever you are in the world book with James. The enthusiasm and knowle (Read More)dge that James brings to the safari is amazing. His passion for the work and desire to share that with others makes him truly special. More than just a safari driver, James is a natural teacher. His understanding of the complete interdependence of the environment, climate and all the creatures you’ll encounter on your safari are educational and incredible. He brings to life the web of life! One special thing of note: safari environments can get very crowded. The number of vehicles surrounding a lion, elephant, etc can be quite distracting. Because of James experience, we enjoyed numerous opportunities where we were the only ones present to enjoy incredible wildlife viewings. Those are the memories I will remember most. I visited three different national parks: Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, and Masai Mara, and each one had its own unique charm and beauty. Amboseli National Park The first stop of the trip was Amboseli National Park, where I witnessed the majestic sight of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. The park is home to hundreds of elephants, as well as zebras, giraffes, wildebeests, and many other animals. I was lucky enough to see a large herd of elephants crossing the road right in front of our vehicle, and it was a breathtaking moment. The park also has a variety of birds, such as flamingos, pelicans, and storks, that add color and life to the landscape. Lake Nakuru National Park The second stop of the trip was Lake Nakuru National Park, which is famous for its pink flamingos that cover the lake's shore. The park also has a rich diversity of wildlife, including rhinos, lions, leopards, buffaloes, and hyenas. I was thrilled to see a rare sighting of a black rhino and white rhinos, which is one of the most endangered animals in the world. Masai Mara National Reserve The last stop of the trip was Masai Mara National Reserve, which is the ultimate destination for any wildlife lover. The reserve is part of the Serengeti ecosystem, and hosts the annual migration of millions of wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles, who cross the Mara River in search of greener pastures.
