- Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is an orphanage, nursery, and captive breeding ground for wild Asian elephants located in Pinnawala village, 13 km (8.1 miles) northwest of Kegalle town in Sabaragamuwa Province, Sri Lanka.
- Pinnawala is notable for having the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. In 2015, there were 88 elephants, including 37 males and 51 females from three generations, living in Pinnawala.

- Kitulgala is a small town in the west of Sri Lanka, located in the wet zone rainforest, which experiences two monsoons each year and is one of the wettest places in the country. However, it comes alive in the first three months of the year, especially in February, the driest month.
- The Academy Award-winning film "The Bridge on the River Kwai" was filmed on the Kelani River near Kitulgala, although nothing remains now except the concrete foundations for the bridge and, supposedly, the submerged train cars that plunged into the river in the climactic scene.
