Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 Port Blair to Baratang and Rangat
  • The Rangat Andaman package begins at Port Blair Airport where our representative meets the group on arrival. The drive north toward Rangat takes the convoy route through the Jarawa Tribal Reserve near Jirkatang — the escorted passage through a legally protected tribal area where stopping and photography are strictly prohibited under Indian law. The convoy reaches Baratang in approximately 3 to 4 hours from Port Blair. The Day 1 Baratang programme covers both main sites — the limestone caves, reached by motorboat from the Baratang jetty across a mangrove creek followed by a 15 to 20 minute jungle trek to the cave entrance where natural stalactite and stalagmite formations are visible by torchlight, and the mud volcanoes a short walk from the main road where slow subsurface gas activity pushes through low grey clay mounds unlike anything else in the archipelago. The drive continues to Rangat after Baratang. Overnight at Rangat.
  • Day 2 of this Rangat Andaman package opens on the water before the morning is properly underway — the Moricedera mangrove creek near Rangat is best entered by boat in the early hours when the tide is moving and the birdlife in the canopy is active. The creek winds through mangrove forest dense enough that the canopy closes overhead in sections, blocking the sky and replacing it with layered green. Herons, kingfishers and other waterbird species associated with the mangrove ecosystem move through the branches at this hour in a way they do not once the day warms and the boat traffic increases. The afternoon is for Cuthbert Bay Beach — approximately 8 kilometres from Rangat town, a long undeveloped stretch where the forest department runs an olive ridley turtle nesting protection programme. The beach is wide and the sand is dark near the waterline where the forest edge meets the shore. The nesting season runs approximately January to March. Overnight at Rangat.
  • The pre-dawn walk to Cuthbert Bay on Day 3 of this Rangat Andaman package is the turtle nesting window. Between January and March olive ridley turtles come ashore at Cuthbert Bay after dark to dig nests and lay eggs — the activity happens at night and the pre-dawn hours are when the last turtles of the night are finishing and returning to the water. Sightings are not guaranteed — the number of turtles that come ashore on any given night varies and depends on conditions that no tour operator can predict. The beach walk in the dark before sunrise is worth doing regardless of whether a turtle appears — the scale of the empty beach, the sound of the surf and the specific quality of that hour before first light on an undeveloped coastline are sufficient reason to be there. The Rangat Bay harbour in the morning hours after returning from Cuthbert Bay carries its own working rhythm — fishing boats, the ferry jetty, the market beginning. Amkunj Beach in the afternoon is a quieter stretch near the bay. Overnight at Rangat.
  • Day 4 of this Rangat Andaman package is the return drive from Rangat to Port Blair — approximately 170 kilometres taking 5 to 6 hours with the southbound convoy passage through the Jarawa Tribal Reserve applying the same rules as the northbound run — no stopping, no photography, no interaction. The drive south from Rangat after three nights in Middle Andaman passes through a landscape that looks different from the return direction — the forest feels more familiar, the convoy passage less novel, the outskirts of Port Blair more crowded than memory of them left. The Cellular Jail in the late afternoon gives the history dimension that the Middle Andaman days did not carry — the colonial prison built between 1896 and 1906 across seven radiating wings, followed by the evening light and sound show of approximately 45 minutes in the courtyard after dark. Overnight in Port Blair.
  • The final morning of the Rangat Andaman package is in Port Blair. Groups with afternoon or evening departure flights have time for Ross Island — now Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island — reached by a short boat ride from Aberdeen Jetty, the colonial ruins standing in forest with deer moving through the cleared paths. North Bay is available for a glass bottom boat ride over the reef close to Port Blair. The Sagarika government emporium near the clock tower carries Andaman shell craft and local spices at fixed prices. The Bon Voyagers vehicle drops at Port Blair Airport. The five days have covered the geological south of the archipelago at Baratang, the mangrove and turtle coast of Middle Andaman at Rangat and the colonial history of Port Blair — a circuit of the islands that has nothing to do with beach resorts and everything to do with what the Andamans are made of beneath the surface.
