Departing from Moshi, a 45-minute drive leads through the village of Machame to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. After obtaining the necessary permits, begin the trek through the lush rainforest. The trail is scenic and winding, with opportunities to observe local flora, fauna, and wildlife. At lower elevations, the terrain can be muddy and slippery, so gaiters and trekking poles are highly recommended.

Elevation: 3021m (9911ft) to 3839m (12,595ft)
Altitude Gain: 818m

After a restful night and a hearty breakfast, ascend out of the rainforest, crossing a valley and navigating a steep, rocky ridge. The trail turns west, following a river gorge toward Shira Camp. As elevation increases, temperatures begin to drop, marking the transition to the moorland zone.

Although the day begins and ends at similar elevations, it is crucial for acclimatization. The trek continues east along a ridge, passing a junction toward Kibo Peak before heading southeast toward Lava Tower, also known as the “Shark’s Tooth” (elevation: 4650m / 15,250ft). After reaching Lava Tower, descend to Barranco Camp for the night.

Begin the day with the challenging climb up the Barranco Wall, an exciting ascent with stunning views. The trail then descends into the Karanga Valley before joining the Mweka Trail junction. Summit day begins between midnight and 2 a.m., marking the most physically and mentally demanding portion of the trek. The ascent follows a zigzagging path through scree between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. Upon reaching Stella Point at the crater rim, witness a stunning sunrise before continuing for approximately one hour to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

After celebrating the achievement, taking photos, and enjoying the view, begin the descent toward Mweka Camp. A stop at Barafu Camp allows for a short rest and lunch before continuing down the steep, gravel-filled path. Gaiters and trekking poles are strongly recommended.
