Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 Nairobi - Amboseli National Park
Your journey begins with an early morning pickup from your Nairobi hotel at 07:30 hrs. After a short safari briefing, you'll depart Kenya’s capital and head toward the scenic landscapes of Amboseli. Along the way, enjoy picturesque stops for photography and coffee breaks. Arrive in time for lunch at Sentrim Amboseli Lodge. After a short rest from the five-hour drive, venture into your first game drive within Amboseli National Park. The day ends with dramatic silhouette photography against the sunset, and on clear days, a stunning view of Mount Kilimanjaro with wildlife in the foreground.
Today is dedicated entirely to exploring the wonders of Amboseli. With a flexible schedule, you can opt for both early morning and afternoon game drives. After a packed breakfast, set off early to capture Amboseli’s magic in the soft morning light. The park is renowned for its herds of elephants, as well as predators like lions and cheetahs. You may also spot rare species such as the African civet, wildcat, or honey badger. One of the highlights is the dry Lake Amboseli, an open expanse ideal for photographing wildlife crossing its flat terrain. Return to the lodge for meals and overnight rest.
Depart Amboseli early and make your way to Lake Naivasha. En route, enjoy a stop at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint to witness its sheer scale and geological beauty. Pass by Mount Longonot, a dormant volcano, and the Italian Catholic Church built in 1942. Upon reaching Sawela Lodge, enjoy lunch and a short rest. Later in the afternoon, head for a relaxing boat ride on Lake Naivasha, where you’ll encounter hippos and a wide range of birdlife, including African fish eagles. The day concludes with a nature walk on Crescent Island before returning to the lodge.
After breakfast, journey northwards to Aberdare National Park via the Mutubio Gate. As you ascend into the Nyandarua Ranges, pass through lush forest zones teeming with wildlife such as elephants, bushbucks, buffaloes, and elusive species like the melanistic serval or leopard. Explore scenic waterfalls including the majestic Karuru Falls—Kenya’s tallest—and Chania Falls. Visit the Queen’s Caves, a site of historical significance used by both colonial royalty and freedom fighters. End your day with an overnight stay at the unique Treetops Lodge.
After breakfast, continue to Ol Pejeta Conservancy through the Ark Gate. Arrive at Serena Sweet Waters Tented Camp in time for lunch. In the afternoon, embark on a game drive across this remarkable conservancy, home to both black and white rhinos, elephants, big cats, and chimpanzees. The conservancy is globally unique as the last remaining home of the two northern white rhinos, Fatu and Najin, which can be seen with prior booking. Situated on the equator, the park is also home to both reticulated and Masai giraffes. Return to camp for dinner and overnight stay.
Depart after breakfast for Lake Nakuru National Park, a journey of around four hours. Begin your game drive upon arrival. Lake Nakuru is one of Kenya’s best wildlife sanctuaries, known for its rhino conservation efforts. In addition to spotting black and white rhinos, keep an eye out for flamingos, pelicans, lions, leopards, and various antelope species. The park’s rich biodiversity makes it an ideal stop on your safari. Enjoy your meals and overnight stay at Lake Nakuru Lodge.
After an early breakfast, drive to the legendary Masai Mara National Reserve. Along the way, enjoy scenic views and arrive in time for lunch. In the evening, venture into the savannah for your first Mara game drive. Expect to see the Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino—as well as cheetahs and other African wildlife. The Mara is particularly famous for its concentration of big cats. Return to Enkorok Mara Camp for dinner and an overnight stay.
Spend the entire day discovering the iconic Masai Mara. For a once-in-a-lifetime experience, opt for a sunrise hot air balloon safari (at an extra cost of USD 450 per person). The Mara is teeming with life—over 450 species of animals have been recorded. From giraffes and wildebeests to hippos and crocodiles, the variety is breathtaking. If you’re traveling between July and September, you’ll witness the spectacular Great Migration. Return to camp for dinner and overnight.
Begin with an early morning game drive and a picnic breakfast, increasing your chances of spotting predators in action. Today’s flexible itinerary lets you explore based on your preferences. Visit the Mara River, a prime spot to witness dramatic river crossings during the migration season. The rivers—Talek, Sand, and Sekenani—are scenic and offer great photo opportunities. Your expert guide will help you uncover the park’s hidden gems before returning to camp for a final night under the African sky.
After breakfast, drive back to Nairobi, arriving by early evening. You will be dropped off at your Nairobi hotel or directly at the airport, based on your onward travel plans.

Reviews for Wild Portraits Safaris

Best safari trip ever!

(Written on 15 Sep, 2023)

We just came back from our second safari trip with James of Wild Portraits Safari. We had the greatest possible experience during our 9 day-trip from Amboseli (Kenya), to Tarangine, Ngorongoro, Sereng (Read More)eti (Tanzania) and then to the Mara in Kenya. The full trip was well organized and included so many highlights: beautiful sights, the landscapes, the wildlife, James' ability to find the quiet spots with magnificent viewing, great accommodations, breakfast in the Mara, horseback riding amongst buffalo, hyena and giraffes, and of course James' great company, his care for his guests and his drive to make the full experience perfect. We are already planning our next visit and will certainly travel with James again. I highly recommend his services to anyone looking for a fantastic vacation.

Fantastic Guide, Highly Recommend

I have gone on two safaris with Wild Portraits and James M. He does an outstanding job of finding the game and getting his clients into perfect position for photos. The camps and vehicles are all wo (Read More)nderful, and his prices are very competitive. I hope to go with him again sometime soon!

Perfect guidance, exciting safari

(Written on 13 Sep, 2023)

Not only a perfect foto safari but also a deep impressing trip through an endearing landscape with an admirable wildlife. I have to thank James Muchina for fulfilling one of my life dreams. He is a p (Read More)erfect guide, professional, empathic and with never ending patience. Our gamedrives started befor sunrise and ended after exciting hours late in the evening. James has a great knowledge of the animals, the nature and culture as well. I was impressed of his amazing respect for the wild life. This was the cause for intense moments close to wild animals in their natural habitat. Apart from this his photographic expertise provided unique motives. I left Kenia with beautiful pictures in my hart and a well filled memory card. Thousand thanks from the bottom of my heart.

The Best Kenyan Safari

(Written on 13 Sep, 2023)

I have been on multiple photography tours, both to Africa and other places, and let me just say that the photography tour that I just took with Wild Portraits Safaris (WPS) ranks up there with the bes (Read More)t of the best. Everything about the trip was simply spot on perfect. From the very beginning communications, through a need for me to reschedule (my own fault, not theirs), through to the final minutes of the tour...everything was smooth, easy, well-communicated and perfectly executed. I went to Amboseli, Lake Naivashu, and the Mara. I was set up in great accommodations, with special consideration on making sure that we were able to get out into the field in the shortest amount of time. A few things that set WPS apart from other tours. First is the ability to personalize the tour to your interests. Unlike other safari tours with set schedules and specifically timed-itineraries, just let James, the owner/driver/ tour guide, know your interests and he'll continually plan and look out for opportunities and present options to you. For me, he knew I was interested in experiencing as much as possible, so he made sure that we had all day game drives while in the Mara. Second is the fact that James is an excellent photographer, himself. That means that he is constantly looking for the perfect lighting, angle, and composition to hep you get your best photos. Third, you cannot find any tour guide with as much passion for his job. This has led him to learn as much as possible about the land, the conservation efforts, the animals and how all of the factors integrate with each other. Each day wasn't just a photo tour: each day was an immersive learning experience. You definitely can't find a tour company that tries as hard as WPS to make sure that you get every ounce of opportunities in the short time that you are there. For instance, he added an impromptu visit to Nairobi National Park, because I had a lot of extra time before my outbound flight. And lastly, James is an extremely nice person. If you go on safari with WPS, you'll leave with tons of photos, memories, and a friend. I've already planned my next trip with WPS.

A Safari with Wild Portraits Safaris and James Muchina is an experience out of the ordinary, you will never forget it and you will always carry a longing to experience it again. James knowledge of an (Read More)d respect for the wild life is amazing. The wild animals always come first, we are only visitors in their home and James has a humility before nature that is genuine. I don´t know when I´m going again but I know that I will go on safari with James Muchina again. Tina from Sweden

My son and I have experienced an absolutely fantastic and unforgettable safari trip thanks to James and Wild Portrait Safaris. Thanks to his experience and deep understanding and respect for wildlife (Read More)and its surroundings, he gave us so much more than we could ever have dreamed of. Extremely sympathetic and responsive. We have felt so well taken care of and safe. A comprehensive concept that was very convenient where he booked everything and was by our side the whole time. We have not missed anything.

I spent five days photographing in Amboseli NP and five days in the Masai Mara NR with James Muchina and Wild Portraits Safaris in January 2025. He also coordinated and organized a four day gorilla tr (Read More)ekking adventure in Rwanda for me. I started planning this trip about six months in advance and was so impressed with his prompt replies to my many questions and clear communication. Once I arrived it quickly became obvious that James is very experienced, prepared, thoughtful, energetic, enthusiastic and always on time (early actually). He has outstanding knowledge and years of experience with wildlife behaviour, ecology and conservation biology and I enjoyed our regular conversations about these topics. He has an outstanding ability to read animal behaviour, know what they will do next, and position you to photographically make the most of the available light, the subject, the landscape and composition. He’s always watching these variables and repositioning when necessary to keep you in the best possible position. James and Wild Portraits Safaris organized the perfect trip for me and I always felt safe and comfortable. He is such a nice, professional, thoughtful person that he quickly became more of a friend than a guide. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend his services and I can’t imagine travelling his part of the world with anyone else.

Our safari experience October 2024 was amazing. The time w/ James was beyond all my expectations. He is so knowledgeable about the animals and I learned so much. It was way beyond just viewing - but 1 (Read More)00% educational. About how the animals interact, care for each other, mate, stay in families or not etc. James has so much soul and is so passionate about his work and sharing his knowledge with those in his jeep. This is a FIVE STAR review for James at WILD PORTRAITS SAFARIS. We booked a 12 day safari with James to Kenya from the UK (via email & whats app) James arranged our transport in a very comfortable p (Read More)rivate Toyota Land cruiser, all our park fees, full board in 4 & 5 star loges within all the parks and collection from and return to Nairobi prior to and after our safari. We visited and stayed in the parks in the following accommodation: Tsavo East - Aruba Lodge Tsavo West - Kilaguni Lodge Amboleli - Serena Lodge Lake Naivasha - Sopa Lodge Lake Nakuru - Sopa Lodge Masai Mara - Loyk Camp All were discretely nestled in the parks surroundings and beautifully lit at night. All were fully sustainable with solar & natural water resources. All rooms were ensuite, providing everything you could need from tea and coffee making facilities to hair dryers. All had wonderfully comfortable beds and ceiling fans. The food was buffet style, varied and plentiful with an egg and pancake stations at breakfast. ALL the staff were extremely polite and friendly. Drinks were very reasonably priced with a beer and wine together costing $5 From the outset and throughout our 12 days on safari James has exceeded all our expectations and gone that extra mile on numerous occasions. James is an outstanding professional, a knowledgeable conservationist, a lover of the Kenyan wild life and now a life long friend. Where ever you are in the world book with James. You will not be disappointed. I am also happy for James to supply my contact details to anyone to contact me should any one reading this need information or reassurance. I also attach a few of the many picture we captured during our life changing experience

I recently completed my second safari adventure to Kenya. James Muchina at Wild Portraits Safari’s was the guide for both trips. It’s hard to imagine a better experience. The enthusiasm and knowle (Read More)dge that James brings to the safari is amazing. His passion for the work and desire to share that with others makes him truly special. More than just a safari driver, James is a natural teacher. His understanding of the complete interdependence of the environment, climate and all the creatures you’ll encounter on your safari are educational and incredible. He brings to life the web of life! One special thing of note: safari environments can get very crowded. The number of vehicles surrounding a lion, elephant, etc can be quite distracting. Because of James experience, we enjoyed numerous opportunities where we were the only ones present to enjoy incredible wildlife viewings. Those are the memories I will remember most. If you’re looking to build a custom safari; one that is tailored to your interests, contact James.

A memorable and thrilling experience in Kenya I had the opportunity to take an 8-day trip to Kenya with Wild Portraits Safaris, and I must say it was one of the best decisions of my life. The trip was (Read More) well-organized, comfortable, and full of amazing wildlife encounters. I visited three different national parks: Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, and Masai Mara, and each one had its own unique charm and beauty. Amboseli National Park The first stop of the trip was Amboseli National Park, where I witnessed the majestic sight of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. The park is home to hundreds of elephants, as well as zebras, giraffes, wildebeests, and many other animals. I was lucky enough to see a large herd of elephants crossing the road right in front of our vehicle, and it was a breathtaking moment. The park also has a variety of birds, such as flamingos, pelicans, and storks, that add color and life to the landscape. Lake Nakuru National Park The second stop of the trip was Lake Nakuru National Park, which is famous for its pink flamingos that cover the lake's shore. The park also has a rich diversity of wildlife, including rhinos, lions, leopards, buffaloes, and hyenas. I was thrilled to see a rare sighting of a black rhino and white rhinos, which is one of the most endangered animals in the world. Masai Mara National Reserve The last stop of the trip was Masai Mara National Reserve, which is the ultimate destination for any wildlife lover. The reserve is part of the Serengeti ecosystem, and hosts the annual migration of millions of wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles, who cross the Mara River in search of greener pastures. The reserve is also the best place to see the Big Five: lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffaloes. I was fortunate enough to see all of them, and even witnessed a dramatic chase between lions and buffalos. The reserve also has a rich cultural heritage, as it is the home of the Masai people, who are known for their traditional lifestyle and colorful attire. The best guides and service None of this would have been possible without the excellent service and guidance of Wild Portraits Safaris. James, organized everything meticulously, from the accommodation, transportation, meals, and activities. He was always attentive, friendly, and professional, and made sure that I had everything I needed. Surat, another guide, was knowledgeable, experienced, and passionate about wildlife. Both of them knew where to find the best sightings, and how to position the vehicle for the best photography. They also shared interesting facts and stories about the animals and the places we visited. I highly recommend Wild Portraits Safaris to anyone who wants to have an unforgettable and thrilling experience in Kenya. They are the best in the business, and they will make your dreams come true.
