Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 Nairobi - Amboseli National Park
You will be picked up from your Nairobi hotel early in the morning at 07:30 hrs. After a short safari briefing by our Tour Consultant, depart Kenya’s capital and begin your journey toward the Kenyan coast, making scenic stops along the way for landscape photography and coffee breaks. Arrive in time for lunch at Sentrim Amboseli Lodge. After a short rest from the 5-hour drive, embark on your first game drive in Amboseli, searching for elephants and capturing creative landscape shots. End your day with silhouette photography against the setting sun and enjoy the view of Mount Kilimanjaro with animals in the foreground.
Today is dedicated to exploring the best of Amboseli. Our itinerary remains flexible, allowing for early morning and afternoon game drives, with time to relax and enjoy lunch at the lodge. Amboseli is famous for its large herds of elephants, attracted to the region’s swamps. The dusty plains are also home to lions, cheetahs, and other predators. Early morning game drives offer a better chance of spotting rare mammals like the African civet, wildcat, and honey badger. Depart the lodge early with packed breakfast to enjoy the morning light and serenity. Don’t miss the dry Lake Amboseli, an excellent photography spot for elephants and herbivores across its vast bed.
Depart Amboseli early in the morning and head towards Lake Naivasha. En route, stop at the viewpoint overlooking the Great Rift Valley – a geological marvel. Admire Mount Longonot, a massive stratovolcano with an impressive 8x12 km caldera. Drive past the quaint Italian Catholic Church built in 1942 by prisoners of war during the British colonial era. Arrive at Sawela Lodge in time for lunch. After a rest, enjoy a boat ride on Lake Naivasha, home to hippos and over 400 bird species, including African fish eagles hunting for fish. Later, take a nature walk on Crescent Island before returning to the lodge for the night.
After breakfast, drive to Aberdare National Park via the Mutubio Gate. Enter the Nyandarua (Aberdare) Ranges and traverse through different mountain vegetation zones. Look out for wildlife like giant forest hogs, elephants, hyenas, buffaloes, duikers, bushbucks, and possibly the elusive melanistic serval or leopard. Enjoy photo stops at scenic spots and visit stunning waterfalls like Chania Falls and the magnificent Karuru Falls – Kenya’s tallest. Explore the Queen’s Caves, a site used by both Kenya’s Mau Mau fighters and Queen Elizabeth. Visit Magura Falls nearby. Exit the park and overnight at the Treetops Lodge.
After breakfast, head to Ol Pejeta Conservancy via the Ark Gate. Arrive at Serena Sweet Waters Tented Camp and check in for lunch. In the afternoon, set off for your game drive in this unique conservancy, which is home to both black and white rhinos, big cats, elephants, chimpanzees, and the endangered Grevy’s zebra. This is the only place in the world where you can see the last two northern white rhinos—Fatu and Najin—by booking in advance. The conservancy lies at the intersection of northern and southern hemispheres, hosting both reticulated and Masai giraffes. Return to camp for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast, proceed to Lake Nakuru National Park. Arrive after approximately four hours and begin your game drive. Lake Nakuru is home to Kenya’s first rhino sanctuary, and you can see both black and white rhinos. Spot flamingos and pelicans along the shoreline and look out for lions, leopards, antelopes, and other game. Lake Nakuru’s rich ecosystem offers an ideal introduction to Kenya’s biodiversity. Enjoy your stay and meals at Lake Nakuru Lodge.
Depart Nakuru early in the morning and head to the world-renowned Masai Mara National Reserve. After scenic stops along the way, arrive just in time for lunch. In the evening, head out for your first game drive in the Mara in search of lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, cheetahs, and more. The Masai Mara is one of the best places in Africa to spot big cats in action. Return to Enkorok Mara Camp for dinner and overnight stay.
Spend the entire day exploring Masai Mara. Optionally, enjoy a hot air balloon safari at sunrise (extra cost of USD 450 per person). The Mara is incredibly diverse, with over 450 animal species recorded. Expect to see lions, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, hippos, zebras, wildebeest, crocodiles, and possibly leopards and wild dogs. During July to September, witness the awe-inspiring Great Migration as millions of wildebeest and zebra cross from Tanzania’s Serengeti to Kenya’s Mara, trailed by predators. Enjoy dinner and overnight at Enkorok Mara Camp.
Embark on early morning game drives with picnic breakfast for higher chances of spotting predators and catching the golden sunrise. With a flexible schedule, tailor your drives based on your interests. Visit the Mara River, a prime location for witnessing the Great Migration river crossings (July–September), and home to hippos and Nile crocodiles. Explore the scenic Talek, Sand, and Sekenani Rivers. The Sand River, bordering Serengeti, offers beautiful photo opportunities. Your experienced guide will share fascinating insights and help you frame the best wildlife shots. Return to your safari lodge/camp for a delicious dinner and rest.
After breakfast, drive back to Nairobi, arriving by early evening. You’ll be dropped off at your Nairobi hotel or at the airport, depending on your departure plans.

My son and I have experienced an absolutely fantastic and unforgettable safari trip thanks to James and Wild Portrait Safaris. Thanks to his experience and deep understanding and respect for wildlife (Read More)and its surroundings, he gave us so much more than we could ever have dreamed of. Extremely sympathetic and responsive. We have felt so well taken care of and safe. A comprehensive concept that was very convenient where he booked everything and was by our side the whole time. We have not missed anything.

I spent five days photographing in Amboseli NP and five days in the Masai Mara NR with James Muchina and Wild Portraits Safaris in January 2025. He also coordinated and organized a four day gorilla tr (Read More)ekking adventure in Rwanda for me. I started planning this trip about six months in advance and was so impressed with his prompt replies to my many questions and clear communication. Once I arrived it quickly became obvious that James is very experienced, prepared, thoughtful, energetic, enthusiastic and always on time (early actually). He has outstanding knowledge and years of experience with wildlife behaviour, ecology and conservation biology and I enjoyed our regular conversations about these topics. He has an outstanding ability to read animal behaviour, know what they will do next, and position you to photographically make the most of the available light, the subject, the landscape and composition. He’s always watching these variables and repositioning when necessary to keep you in the best possible position. James and Wild Portraits Safaris organized the perfect trip for me and I always felt safe and comfortable. He is such a nice, professional, thoughtful person that he quickly became more of a friend than a guide. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend his services and I can’t imagine travelling his part of the world with anyone else.

A trip of a lifetime! We visited 5 different parks and had the best experience with James. He’s so knowledgeable, down to earth and has great intuition. 10/10 recommend. I can’t wait to go back!

Our safari experience October 2024 was amazing. The time w/ James was beyond all my expectations. He is so knowledgeable about the animals and I learned so much. It was way beyond just viewing - but 1 (Read More)00% educational. About how the animals interact, care for each other, mate, stay in families or not etc. James has so much soul and is so passionate about his work and sharing his knowledge with those in his jeep. I can’t recommend James enough - I feel so lucky that we landed with him as our safari guide! You will be so happy if you book your Safari with James at Wild Portrait Safaris!

This is a FIVE STAR review for James at WILD PORTRAITS SAFARIS. We booked a 12 day safari with James to Kenya from the UK (via email & whats app) James arranged our transport in a very comfortable p (Read More)rivate Toyota Land cruiser, all our park fees, full board in 4 & 5 star loges within all the parks and collection from and return to Nairobi prior to and after our safari. We visited and stayed in the parks in the following accommodation: Tsavo East - Aruba Lodge Tsavo West - Kilaguni Lodge Amboleli - Serena Lodge Lake Naivasha - Sopa Lodge Lake Nakuru - Sopa Lodge Masai Mara - Loyk Camp All were discretely nestled in the parks surroundings and beautifully lit at night. All were fully sustainable with solar & natural water resources. All rooms were ensuite, providing everything you could need from tea and coffee making facilities to hair dryers. All had wonderfully comfortable beds and ceiling fans. The food was buffet style, varied and plentiful with an egg and pancake stations at breakfast. ALL the staff were extremely polite and friendly. Drinks were very reasonably priced with a beer and wine together costing $5 From the outset and throughout our 12 days on safari James has exceeded all our expectations and gone that extra mile on numerous occasions. James is an outstanding professional, a knowledgeable conservationist, a lover of the Kenyan wild life and now a life long friend. Where ever you are in the world book with James. You will not be disappointed. I am also happy for James to supply my contact details to anyone to contact me should any one reading this need information or reassurance. I also attach a few of the many picture we captured during our life changing experience

I recently completed my second safari adventure to Kenya. James Muchina at Wild Portraits Safari’s was the guide for both trips. It’s hard to imagine a better experience. The enthusiasm and knowle (Read More)dge that James brings to the safari is amazing. His passion for the work and desire to share that with others makes him truly special. More than just a safari driver, James is a natural teacher. His understanding of the complete interdependence of the environment, climate and all the creatures you’ll encounter on your safari are educational and incredible. He brings to life the web of life! One special thing of note: safari environments can get very crowded. The number of vehicles surrounding a lion, elephant, etc can be quite distracting. Because of James experience, we enjoyed numerous opportunities where we were the only ones present to enjoy incredible wildlife viewings. Those are the memories I will remember most. If you’re looking to build a custom safari; one that is tailored to your interests, contact James.

A memorable and thrilling experience in Kenya I had the opportunity to take an 8-day trip to Kenya with Wild Portraits Safaris, and I must say it was one of the best decisions of my life. The trip was (Read More) well-organized, comfortable, and full of amazing wildlife encounters. I visited three different national parks: Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, and Masai Mara, and each one had its own unique charm and beauty. Amboseli National Park The first stop of the trip was Amboseli National Park, where I witnessed the majestic sight of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. The park is home to hundreds of elephants, as well as zebras, giraffes, wildebeests, and many other animals. I was lucky enough to see a large herd of elephants crossing the road right in front of our vehicle, and it was a breathtaking moment. The park also has a variety of birds, such as flamingos, pelicans, and storks, that add color and life to the landscape. Lake Nakuru National Park The second stop of the trip was Lake Nakuru National Park, which is famous for its pink flamingos that cover the lake's shore. The park also has a rich diversity of wildlife, including rhinos, lions, leopards, buffaloes, and hyenas. I was thrilled to see a rare sighting of a black rhino and white rhinos, which is one of the most endangered animals in the world. Masai Mara National Reserve The last stop of the trip was Masai Mara National Reserve, which is the ultimate destination for any wildlife lover. The reserve is part of the Serengeti ecosystem, and hosts the annual migration of millions of wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles, who cross the Mara River in search of greener pastures. The reserve is also the best place to see the Big Five: lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffaloes. I was fortunate enough to see all of them, and even witnessed a dramatic chase between lions and buffalos. The reserve also has a rich cultural heritage, as it is the home of the Masai people, who are known for their traditional lifestyle and colorful attire. The best guides and service None of this would have been possible without the excellent service and guidance of Wild Portraits Safaris. James, organized everything meticulously, from the accommodation, transportation, meals, and activities. He was always attentive, friendly, and professional, and made sure that I had everything I needed. Surat, another guide, was knowledgeable, experienced, and passionate about wildlife. Both of them knew where to find the best sightings, and how to position the vehicle for the best photography. They also shared interesting facts and stories about the animals and the places we visited. I highly recommend Wild Portraits Safaris to anyone who wants to have an unforgettable and thrilling experience in Kenya. They are the best in the business, and they will make your dreams come true.

We just came back from our second safari trip with James of Wild Portraits Safari. We had the greatest possible experience during our 9 day-trip from Amboseli (Kenya), to Tarangine, Ngorongoro, Sereng (Read More)eti (Tanzania) and then to the Mara in Kenya. The full trip was well organized and included so many highlights: beautiful sights, the landscapes, the wildlife, James' ability to find the quiet spots with magnificent viewing, great accommodations, breakfast in the Mara, horseback riding amongst buffalo, hyena and giraffes, and of course James' great company, his care for his guests and his drive to make the full experience perfect. We are already planning our next visit and will certainly travel with James again. I highly recommend his services to anyone looking for a fantastic vacation.
