Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 Nairobi to Amboseli National Park (Approx. 5hrs).

Depart from Nairobi early in the morning, heading south with several stops along the way for scenic views and coffee breaks.
Arrive in time for lunch at Amboseli Serena Hotel.
After a relaxing break from the 4 to 5-hour drive, embark on the first game drive in search of elephants and other interesting wildlife.
Conclude the evening with silhouette photography as the sun sets, featuring Mount Kilimanjaro with animals in the foreground.

Day 2 Gentle Elephants and Kilimanjaro

Depart from the camp after breakfast.
Spend the day exploring the magnificent Amboseli National Park.
Search for cheetahs, lions, and large herds of elephants, which are the main highlights of this beautiful park.
Observe prolific birdlife in the swamps fed by Mount Kilimanjaro, along with hippos, zebras, gnus, and a variety of gazelles and antelope.
Experience one of the best elephant safari opportunities as large herds move in and out of the park in the morning and evening, providing perfect chances for elephant and Mount Kilimanjaro photography.
This is a private safari, allowing for flexible game drives that consider the children's endurance.

Day 3 Amboseli National Park to Ol Pejeta conservancy

From Amboseli, we drive to the Mt. Kenya region to arrive at Comfort Garden Sweetwaters, where you will be exploring.
Dinner and overnight accommodations are at the Serena Sweetwaters Camp. Optional night game drives to see nocturnal animals can be arranged at an extra cost.
Sweetwaters is the only sanctuary in Kenya dedicated to the rehabilitation of widely abused chimpanzees, with two groups living in an environment as close to their natural habitat as possible.
The site is also a dedicated black rhino breeding area.
It is home to the fastest-growing population of rhinos in Africa.
There are southern white rhinos, about 80 endangered black rhinos, and in a special sanctuary, there are two of the world's last remaining northern white rhinos.

Day 4 Ol Pejeta to Samburu National Reserve

After an early morning breakfast, you will head to the jewel of the North, Samburu Game Reserve.
Arrive in time for lunch at Ashnil Samburu.
Later in the afternoon, we will head out for our first game drive in search of African elephants, leopards, lions, and the African sunset.

Day 5 Full Day at Samburu National Reserve

A tailored game drive to maximize your time and opportunity to explore Samburu National Reserve.
Enjoy watching elephants wallowing in the brown waters of the Ewaso Nyiro River.
Observe Reticulated giraffes that dot the landscape.
Spot the spear-horned oryx, giraffe antelope, gerenuk, endangered Grevy's zebra, and unique Somali ostrich, which are some of Samburu's highlights.
It is one of the best places to see the beautiful spotted cat, the leopard, as well as birds of prey, Somali bee-eaters, and woodpeckers.
Experience the presence of cheetahs in their natural habitat.
The area is named after the beautiful Samburu people who have coexisted with this amazing wildlife for ages.
You can visit a cultural village to experience some of Kenya's diverse culture.

Day 6 Samburu National Reserve to Lake Naivasha

We leave camp after breakfast and drive to Lake Naivasha.
We make a stop at the East African section of the Great Rift Valley viewpoint, a geological wonder of the world.
Enjoy views of Mount Longonot, a stratovolcano with an 8x12 km caldera.
We drive past the small Italian Catholic church built in 1942 during World War II, when Italians were prisoners of war, and Kenya was still a British colony until 1963.
We arrive in time for lunch, and after a brief rest, we head out for the afternoon's activities.
We begin with a one-hour boat ride on the only freshwater lake in the Kenyan Rift Valley, which is home to hippos and over 400 bird species.
Observe pied kingfishers in action and the African fish eagle searching for its primary food source, fish.
Common carp is the most prevalent fish in the lake.
Later, we go out for a nature walk at Crescent Island.

Day 7 Lake Naivasha to Masai Mara National Reserve

Depart from Naivasha early in the morning.
Travel to the Masai Mara with several stops en route.
Arrive at the Mara in time for lunch.
Embark on an evening game drive in search of the big cats of Masai Mara, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, rhinos, and other species.
The Masai Mara National Reserve offers unrivaled opportunities for big cat sightings.
Return to the Serenity Mara Legends Camp for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 8 Full day at Masai Mara National Reserve

Full day spent exploring the park in search of the Big Five and other predators.
Optional hot air balloon safari can be arranged at an extra cost of US$ 450 per person.
Dinner and overnight stay at Serenity Mara Legends Camp.
The Mara offers wildlife in such variety and abundance that it is difficult to believe over 450 species of animals have been recorded here.
You will easily see lions, rhinos, hippos, crocodiles, giraffes, wildebeests, zebras, buffalo, warthogs, hyenas, jackals, wild dogs, leopards, many kinds of antelopes, and elephants.
In the Mara, perhaps the most spectacular event of the natural world takes place: the annual migration of millions of wildebeests and zebras from the Serengeti (Tanzania) in search of water and pasture.
Following on their heels are the predators of the savanna: lions, cheetahs, wild dogs, jackals, hyenas, and vultures.

Day 9 The Big Cat Show

We have a very flexible itinerary, and game drives are tailored to your interests with our experienced professional safari guide.
An early morning game drive with a picnic breakfast increases your chances of witnessing the sunrise and observing animals while they are still active.
The morning serenity is indescribable; you simply have to experience it.
The Mara River, where river crossings occur in July, August, and September, is the main water body winding through this paradise.
Hippopotamuses and Nile crocodiles call this area home, making it the best place in the reserve to catch a glimpse of them as they bask on the riverbanks.
The Sand River is another picturesque area in the Masai Mara, located right at the border with the endless plains of the Serengeti.
Throughout the journey, our safari guide will explain more about nature as it unfolds before you, ensuring you capture the best angles for your photos.
Later, you will retire to your strategically located safari camp for a sumptuous dinner and overnight stay.

Day 10 Masai Mara to Nairobi

After breakfast, we will head back to Nairobi, arriving by early evening.
You will either be dropped off at a Nairobi hotel or at the airport.

We had the greatest possible experience during our 9 day-trip from Amboseli (Kenya), to Tarangine, Ngorongoro, Sereng (Read More)eti (Tanzania) and then to the Mara in Kenya. The full trip was well organized and included so many highlights: beautiful sights, the landscapes, the wildlife, James' ability to find the quiet spots with magnificent viewing, great accommodations, breakfast in the Mara, horseback riding amongst buffalo, hyena and giraffes, and of course James' great company, his care for his guests and his drive to make the full experience perfect. I have been on multiple photography tours, both to Africa and other places, and let me just say that the photography tour that I just took with Wild Portraits Safaris (WPS) ranks up there with the bes (Read More)t of the best. Everything about the trip was simply spot on perfect. From the very beginning communications, through a need for me to reschedule (my own fault, not theirs), through to the final minutes of the tour...everything was smooth, easy, well-communicated and perfectly executed. I went to Amboseli, Lake Naivashu, and the Mara. I was set up in great accommodations, with special consideration on making sure that we were able to get out into the field in the shortest amount of time. A few things that set WPS apart from other tours. First is the ability to personalize the tour to your interests. Unlike other safari tours with set schedules and specifically timed-itineraries, just let James, the owner/driver/ tour guide, know your interests and he'll continually plan and look out for opportunities and present options to you. For me, he knew I was interested in experiencing as much as possible, so he made sure that we had all day game drives while in the Mara. Second is the fact that James is an excellent photographer, himself. That means that he is constantly looking for the perfect lighting, angle, and composition to hep you get your best photos. Third, you cannot find any tour guide with as much passion for his job. This has led him to learn as much as possible about the land, the conservation efforts, the animals and how all of the factors integrate with each other. Each day wasn't just a photo tour: each day was an immersive learning experience. You definitely can't find a tour company that tries as hard as WPS to make sure that you get every ounce of opportunities in the short time that you are there. For instance, he added an impromptu visit to Nairobi National Park, because I had a lot of extra time before my outbound flight. And lastly, James is an extremely nice person. If you go on safari with WPS, you'll leave with tons of photos, memories, and a friend. I've already planned my next trip with WPS.
