Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 Nairobi to Amboseli National Park (Approx. 5hrs).

Leave Nairobi Early in the morning and head south with several stops on the way for landscapes and coffee breaks. We arrive in time for lunch at Amboseli Serena Hotel. After relaxing from the 4 to 5 hours' drive, we embark on our first game drive looking for elephants and any interesting creative setup. We end the evening with silhouette photography as the sun goes down and watching the Mount Kilimanjaro with animals in the fore ground.

We leave the Camp after Breakfast, spend the day exploring the wonderful Amboseli national park. We search for cheetahs, lions, big herds of elephants which are the main highlights of this beautiful park. In the swamps that are fed water by the Mount Kilimanjaro there is prolific birdlife as well, hippos, zebras, gnus and a variety of gazelles and antelope. Amboseli offers one of the best elephant safari experiences as huge herds move into and out of the park in the morning and in the evening giving you perfect opportunities of elephant and Mount Kilimanjaro photography.
This is a private safari thus game drives are flexible, and we also consider how much the kids can handle.

From Amboseli we drive to Mt Kenya region to arrive Comfort Garden Sweetwaters where you will be exploring. Dinner and overnight at the Comfort Garden sweet waters optional night game drives to see the nocturnal animals can be arranged at an extra cost.
Sweetwater's is the only sanctuary for rehabilitation in Kenya of these widely abused chimpanzees with two groups living in an environment as close to their natural habitat as possible. The site is also a dedicated black rhino breeding area
It is also where the fastest-growing population of rhinos in Africa can be found.
There are southern white rhinos, about 80 endangered black rhinos and in a special sanctuary there are two of the world’s last remaining northern white rhinos.

After early morning breakfast you will head to the jewel of the North Samburu game reserve. Arrive in time for lunch at Samburu Simba Lodge. Later in the afternoon we head out for our 1st game drive in search of the African elephant, leopards’ lions as well as the African sunset.

A tailored game drive to give you the maximum time and opportunity to explore Samburu national reserve, enjoy the elephants wallowing and enjoying the brown waters of the ewaso nyiro river, Reticulated giraffes dot the landscape, the spear horned oryx, the giraffe antelope, the gerenuk, the endangered grevys zebra and the unique Somali ostrich are some of Samburu’s highlights. It is also one of the best places to see the spotted beautiful cat, the leopard, birds of prey, the Somali beef eater beautiful woodpeckers’ cheetahs. The area is named after the beautiful Samburu people who reside in this area, and they have co-existed with this amazing wildlife for ages. You can visit a cultural village and get to experience some of Kenya’s diverse culture.

We leave camp after breakfast and drive Lake Naivasha. We make a stop at the East African section of the great rift valley viewpoint. It is a geologic wonder of the world. A fracture on the earths in the earth’s surface. Enjoy views of a stratovolcano, Mount Longonot, with an 8x12 km caldera is quite a sight to behold. Drive on further past the small Italian catholic church built in 1942 during the second world war, the Italians were prisoners of war and Kenya at that time was still a British colony until 1963. We arrive in time for lunch then later after a brief rest head out for the afternoon’s activities. We begin with the boat ride, about one hour in the only freshwater lake in the Kenyan rift valley that is home to hippos and over 400 bird species. Get pied kingfishers in action, the African fish eagle busy looking for the all-important protein source, the fish. Common carp is the most common fish here. Later we go out for a nature walk at the crescent island.

Leave Naivasha early in the morning and head to the Masai Mara with several stops enroute, Reach the Mara in perfect time for lunch and later leave for the evening game drive in search of the big cats of Masai mara, the lions, leopards cheetahs elephants’ rhinos and other species of elephants. The Masai mara national reserve offer unrivalled opportunities for big cat sightings. Check back to the camp /lodge for dinner and overnight. Dinner and overnight at Zebra Plains Mara Camp the Mara offers wildlife in such variety and abundance that it is difficult to believe over 450 species of animals have been recorded here. You will easily see lions, rhinos, hippos, crocodiles, giraffe, wildebeests, zebras, buffalo, warthogs, hyenas, jackals, wild dogs, buffalo, leopard, many kinds of antelopes and elephant. It is in the Mara that perhaps the most spectacular event of the natural world takes place. This is the annual migration of millions of wildebeest and zebra from the Serengeti (Tanzania) in search of water and pasture. Following on their heels are the predators of the savanna- lion, cheetah, wild dog, jackal, hyena and vultures.

We have a very flexible itinerary and game drives are tailored to your interests with our experienced professional safari guide. Early morning game drive with picnic breakfast gets you higher probabilities of catching the sunrise, animals whilst they are still active. The morning serenity is just unexplainable; you just have to experience. The Mara River where river crossings happen in July August September is the main water body snaking its way through this paradise. Hippopotamus and the Nile crocodile call this home and it’s the best place I the reserve to catch a glimpse of them as they warm themselves in the riverbanks. The sand river is another picturesque area at the Masai mara and it is right at the border with the endless plains, the Serengeti. My son and I have experienced an absolutely fantastic and unforgettable safari trip thanks to James and Wild Portrait Safaris. Thanks to his experience and deep understanding and respect for wildlife (Read More)and its surroundings, he gave us so much more than we could ever have dreamed of. Extremely sympathetic and responsive. We have felt so well taken care of and safe. A comprehensive concept that was very convenient where he booked everything and was by our side the whole time. We have not missed anything.

I spent five days photographing in Amboseli NP and five days in the Masai Mara NR with James Muchina and Wild Portraits Safaris in January 2025. He also coordinated and organized a four day gorilla tr (Read More)ekking adventure in Rwanda for me. I started planning this trip about six months in advance and was so impressed with his prompt replies to my many questions and clear communication. Once I arrived it quickly became obvious that James is very experienced, prepared, thoughtful, energetic, enthusiastic and always on time (early actually). He has outstanding knowledge and years of experience with wildlife behaviour, ecology and conservation biology and I enjoyed our regular conversations about these topics. He has an outstanding ability to read animal behaviour, know what they will do next, and position you to photographically make the most of the available light, the subject, the landscape and composition. He’s always watching these variables and repositioning when necessary to keep you in the best possible position. James and Wild Portraits Safaris organized the perfect trip for me and I always felt safe and comfortable. He is such a nice, professional, thoughtful person that he quickly became more of a friend than a guide. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend his services and I can’t imagine travelling his part of the world with anyone else.

A trip of a lifetime! We visited 5 different parks and had the best experience with James. He’s so knowledgeable, down to earth and has great intuition. 10/10 recommend. I can’t wait to go back!

Our safari experience October 2024 was amazing. The time w/ James was beyond all my expectations. He is so knowledgeable about the animals and I learned so much. It was way beyond just viewing - but 1 (Read More)00% educational. About how the animals interact, care for each other, mate, stay in families or not etc. James has so much soul and is so passionate about his work and sharing his knowledge with those in his jeep. I can’t recommend James enough - I feel so lucky that we landed with him as our safari guide! You will be so happy if you book your Safari with James at Wild Portrait Safaris!

This is a FIVE STAR review for James at WILD PORTRAITS SAFARIS. We booked a 12 day safari with James to Kenya from the UK (via email & whats app) James arranged our transport in a very comfortable p (Read More)rivate Toyota Land cruiser, all our park fees, full board in 4 & 5 star loges within all the parks and collection from and return to Nairobi prior to and after our safari. We visited and stayed in the parks in the following accommodation: Tsavo East - Aruba Lodge Tsavo West - Kilaguni Lodge Amboleli - Serena Lodge Lake Naivasha - Sopa Lodge Lake Nakuru - Sopa Lodge Masai Mara - Loyk Camp All were discretely nestled in the parks surroundings and beautifully lit at night. All were fully sustainable with solar & natural water resources. All rooms were ensuite, providing everything you could need from tea and coffee making facilities to hair dryers. All had wonderfully comfortable beds and ceiling fans. The food was buffet style, varied and plentiful with an egg and pancake stations at breakfast. ALL the staff were extremely polite and friendly. Drinks were very reasonably priced with a beer and wine together costing $5 From the outset and throughout our 12 days on safari James has exceeded all our expectations and gone that extra mile on numerous occasions. James is an outstanding professional, a knowledgeable conservationist, a lover of the Kenyan wild life and now a life long friend. Where ever you are in the world book with James. You will not be disappointed. I am also happy for James to supply my contact details to anyone to contact me should any one reading this need information or reassurance. I also attach a few of the many picture we captured during our life changing experience

I recently completed my second safari adventure to Kenya. James Muchina at Wild Portraits Safari’s was the guide for both trips. It’s hard to imagine a better experience. The enthusiasm and knowle (Read More)dge that James brings to the safari is amazing. His passion for the work and desire to share that with others makes him truly special. More than just a safari driver, James is a natural teacher. His understanding of the complete interdependence of the environment, climate and all the creatures you’ll encounter on your safari are educational and incredible. He brings to life the web of life! One special thing of note: safari environments can get very crowded. The number of vehicles surrounding a lion, elephant, etc can be quite distracting. Because of James experience, we enjoyed numerous opportunities where we were the only ones present to enjoy incredible wildlife viewings. Those are the memories I will remember most. If you’re looking to build a custom safari; one that is tailored to your interests, contact James.

A memorable and thrilling experience in Kenya I had the opportunity to take an 8-day trip to Kenya with Wild Portraits Safaris, and I must say it was one of the best decisions of my life. The trip was (Read More) well-organized, comfortable, and full of amazing wildlife encounters. I visited three different national parks: Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, and Masai Mara, and each one had its own unique charm and beauty. Amboseli National Park The first stop of the trip was Amboseli National Park, where I witnessed the majestic sight of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. The park is home to hundreds of elephants, as well as zebras, giraffes, wildebeests, and many other animals. I was lucky enough to see a large herd of elephants crossing the road right in front of our vehicle, and it was a breathtaking moment. The park also has a variety of birds, such as flamingos, pelicans, and storks, that add color and life to the landscape. Lake Nakuru National Park The second stop of the trip was Lake Nakuru National Park, which is famous for its pink flamingos that cover the lake's shore. The park also has a rich diversity of wildlife, including rhinos, lions, leopards, buffaloes, and hyenas. I was thrilled to see a rare sighting of a black rhino and white rhinos, which is one of the most endangered animals in the world. Masai Mara National Reserve The last stop of the trip was Masai Mara National Reserve, which is the ultimate destination for any wildlife lover. The reserve is part of the Serengeti ecosystem, and hosts the annual migration of millions of wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles, who cross the Mara River in search of greener pastures. The reserve is also the best place to see the Big Five: lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffaloes. I was fortunate enough to see all of them, and even witnessed a dramatic chase between lions and buffalos. The reserve also has a rich cultural heritage, as it is the home of the Masai people, who are known for their traditional lifestyle and colorful attire. The best guides and service None of this would have been possible without the excellent service and guidance of Wild Portraits Safaris. James, organized everything meticulously, from the accommodation, transportation, meals, and activities. He was always attentive, friendly, and professional, and made sure that I had everything I needed. Surat, another guide, was knowledgeable, experienced, and passionate about wildlife. Both of them knew where to find the best sightings, and how to position the vehicle for the best photography. They also shared interesting facts and stories about the animals and the places we visited. I highly recommend Wild Portraits Safaris to anyone who wants to have an unforgettable and thrilling experience in Kenya. They are the best in the business, and they will make your dreams come true.

We just came back from our second safari trip with James of Wild Portraits Safari. We had the greatest possible experience during our 9 day-trip from Amboseli (Kenya), to Tarangine, Ngorongoro, Sereng (Read More)eti (Tanzania) and then to the Mara in Kenya. The full trip was well organized and included so many highlights: beautiful sights, the landscapes, the wildlife, James' ability to find the quiet spots with magnificent viewing, great accommodations, breakfast in the Mara, horseback riding amongst buffalo, hyena and giraffes, and of course James' great company, his care for his guests and his drive to make the full experience perfect. We are already planning our next visit and will certainly travel with James again. I highly recommend his services to anyone looking for a fantastic vacation.
