Malacological Museum, Makarska Overview

Established inside the ancient Franciscan monastery of St Mary, Malacological Museum is one of Makarska's most renowned and preserved cultural establishments. Famous for its collection of 3000 shells, the museum emphasizes awe-inspiring scientific details of sea mollusks.

Built in 1963 by the scientist and monk Dr. Friar Jure Radić, the museum also maintains a collection of fossils and a valuable herbarium of plants taken from the Biokovo mountain. These collections of living indigenous are said to be a devotion to the floral image of the region for all twelve months round the year. However, the main highlight of the museum's collections are shells of sea snails, shellfish, and several specimens belonging to various marine species. Inside the museum, one would explore how shells are used in food, jewelry, artifacts, pearls et cetera.
