The second largest Mangrove forest in the world, Pichavaram is located off the tourist trail but is totally worth the effort. One can be enchanted by the complex river system and canal network that bind this beautiful place together and support the rich biodiversity of the place.
The best time to visit Pichavaram is during winter months of December and January due to pleasant weather and low humidity levels. The day time can still get hotter so carry lots of light cotton clothes for your trip. The forest looks at its mesmerizing best during the winter months as it plays host to countless migratory birds during that time, providing a blissful experience which is second to none.
Air: Nearest airport is at Tiruchirappalli which is 170 km from Chidambaram
Rail: Nearest rail head is at Chidambaram, from here one can hail a taxi or catch public bus till Pichavaram
Road: Pichavaram is well connected by road with Chidambaram. One can easily get a taxi till the town or catch state buses which ply every hour between Chidambaram and Pichavaram.
Pichavaram itself has only one forest department guest lodge for accommodation. Otherwise one can find more suitable accommodation options in the temple town of Chidambaram which is located near by.

Boating, Paddling and Bird watching can be enjoyed at Pichavaram.
Apart from Sunderbans, Pichavaram is the only other mangrove forest in the country. One can experience the fragile ecosystem of these forests and understand the importance these mangrove forests hold the people of Pichavaram.
Try the local Tamil cuisines such as Sambar, Dosa and Idli combined with Pan-Indian food like Chicken Curry, Chinese preparations and Paneer.
Pichavaram is best visited on a day trip from Chidambaram. Reach Chidambaram, and follow it with Pichavaram and a boat ride through the forest.
Day time can be very hot so go for either an early morning or a late evening boating trip. Also if you wish to explore the narrow canals then go for the paddle boats instead of motorboats.
