Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive in Guwahati – Shillong
Upon arrival at Guwahati Airport or railway station, begin your journey to Shillong – the capital of Meghalaya. En route, stop at the picturesque Umiam Lake, a vast reservoir surrounded by pine-clad hills. Shillong, once the capital of Assam, is now Meghalaya’s vibrant hill station. With its colonial charm, mild climate, British architecture, and waterfalls nestled among the Khasi hills, Shillong is often referred to as the “Scotland of the East.” Settle in and enjoy your first evening amid the serene surroundings.
Overnight stay in Shillong.
After breakfast, drive to Cherrapunjee, one of the wettest places on Earth. Locally known as Sohra or Churra, this misty hill town in the East Khasi Hills is famed for its orange groves and dramatic cliffs that overlook Bangladesh. Explore the best of Cherrapunjee with visits to Arwah Cave, Nohkalikai Falls, Mawsmai Cave, Seven Sister Falls, Eco Park, Garden of Caves, and Thangkharang Park. On your way back to Shillong, stop at the scenic Elephant Falls.
Overnight stay in Shillong.
After breakfast, drive towards Dirang, a picturesque town nestled in Arunachal Pradesh. Known for its stone houses and Tibetan Monpa culture, Dirang is charmingly set against the backdrop of rolling hills and a cold river. Above the village rises a hill crowned by the Old Dirang Gompa. The peaceful ambience and stunning landscape make this town a hidden gem in Arunachal.
Overnight stay in Dirang.
After breakfast, proceed to Tawang. En route, witness the majestic snow-covered Sella Pass at 14,000 ft and pay homage at the Jaswant Garh War Memorial – a poignant tribute to Rifleman Jaswant Singh of the 1962 Indo-China War, who is believed to still guard the land in spirit. Continue to Tawang, located at 3,500 metres above sea level. Tawang is surrounded by the Gudpi and Chong-Chugmi ranges and sits on the banks of the Tawang Chu River. The town is largely inhabited by the Monpa tribe, except for the Tibetan-influenced Shyo village.
Overnight stay in Tawang.
Enjoy breakfast and set out to explore the cultural and spiritual heritage of Tawang. Visit the 400-year-old Tawang Monastery – the largest in India and second only to the Potala Palace in Tibet. The monastery houses invaluable books, scriptures, and thangkas, and offers sweeping views of the valley below. Later, visit the Tawang War Memorial – a 40-foot-high multi-colored stupa-style monument commemorating soldiers of the 1962 Sino-Indian War. The rest of the day is free to stroll around the peaceful town and soak in its Himalayan charm.
Overnight stay in Tawang.
Post breakfast, head to Bomdila, the headquarters of West Kameng district. Perched at an altitude of 8,500 ft, Bomdila is a quiet retreat with apple orchards, snow-capped peaks, and colorful Buddhist Gompas. The town is known for its cool climate and traditional charm. Spend your afternoon exploring the local monastery and markets, capturing views of the Eastern Himalayas.
Overnight stay in Bomdila.
After breakfast, embark on a long but scenic drive to Guwahati, the gateway to Northeast India. Though largely modern, Guwahati’s old quarters still reflect its colonial heritage. You’ll notice quiet alleys, old ponds, palm-lined roads, single-storey traditional homes, and a few colonial mansions hiding in the city's busy landscape. Check in and relax after the day’s journey.
Overnight stay in Guwahati.
Enjoy your final breakfast of the trip before heading out to visit Kamakhya Temple, one of the most sacred Shakti Peethas dedicated to Goddess Kamakhya. Located on Nilachal Hill, the temple marks the spot where, as per Hindu mythology, the yoni (female creative power) of Goddess Sati fell. Afterwards, visit Navagraha Temple and Umananda Temple, located on the smallest inhabited river island in the world, accessible via a government ferry. Later, you’ll be transferred to Guwahati airport or railway station for your onward journey.
