Detailed Itinerary
Day 1 Nairobi to Solio Rhino Sanctuary
Leave Nairobi in the morning and head to Solio Ranch, nestled between the Aberdare Ranges and the snowcapped Mount Kenya. Solio is a renowned rhino conservation sanctuary and a haven for both black and white rhinos. It offers a unique opportunity to witness these majestic creatures up close in their natural habitat. Other animals such as lions, leopards, zebras, and various herbivores are also present. After a full afternoon game drive, check into the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 2 Solio to Naivasha through Aberdare National Park
After breakfast, depart Solio and drive through the scenic Aberdare Ranges, locally known as Nyandarua Ranges. This route offers sightings of wildlife such as giant forest hogs, elephants, hyenas, cape buffalos, duikers, bushbucks, and potentially melanistic serval cats or leopards. Stop to admire stunning landscapes, including waterfalls like Chania Falls and the majestic Karuru Falls. Explore Queen’s Cave, a historical spot used by both Kenya’s Mau Mau fighters and Queen Elizabeth. Later, drive for about 2 hours to Lake Naivasha for an overnight stay.
Day 3 Naivasha to Masai mara national Reserve
After an early breakfast, enjoy a boat ride on Lake Naivasha, the only freshwater lake in the Kenyan Rift Valley. Spot hippos and over 400 bird species, including pied kingfishers and African fish eagles. Afterward, take a nature walk at Crescent Island. Later, drive to Masai Mara, arriving in time for lunch at the lodge/camp. In the evening, embark on a game drive. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4 Full Day in Masai Mara – The Land of African Lions
Spend the day exploring Masai Mara Game Reserve, the northern part of the Serengeti ecosystem and home to a rich variety of wildlife. The Mara is especially famous for its dense population of lions. Enjoy flexible game drives tailored to your interests, as you seek out the Big Five – lions, elephants, buffalo, rhinos, and leopards – as well as other wildlife roaming the plains. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge/camp.
Day 5 Full Day in Masai Mara
Another full day in the Mara to delve deeper into the behaviors of its most iconic predators – the lions. Observe pride dynamics, hunting behavior, and territorial displays. An optional hot air balloon safari is available at an extra cost of USD 450 per person. Sightings of rhinos, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, crocodiles, hippos, jackals, hyenas, wild dogs, and antelopes are common. This is also where the legendary Great Migration takes place, as millions of wildebeests and zebras move in search of water and pasture.
Day 6 Masai Mara to Nairobi
After breakfast, depart for Nairobi and arrive by early evening. You will be dropped off at your Nairobi hotel or the airport, marking the end of your safari adventure.

From the very beginning, Christine and Judith from Donwel Tours were highly atte (Read More)ntive to what we were looking to get from our first ever trip to Kenya, and Africa, for that matter. We wanted to cover a lot of ground, and were going from one agency to another before we found Donwel as most agents couldn't quite squeeze everything we wanted into our itinerary. Judith and Christine however made it all possible. Good quality stays everywhere, regular communication through the trip to ensure we were ok and were getting what we wanted. Special shoutout to Teeman, our driver who absolutely fantastic, drove safely and ensured our safety and comfort throughout the trip, regularly coordinating with Christine. This is an excellent team and we would highly recommend their services.
Everything was perfect.

I reached out to Wild Portraits via a safari service website that featured numer (Read More)ous tour operators. Among the competition, James stood out due to his exceptional patience, politeness, and genuine curiosity displayed during our initial phone calls.
James swiftly emerged as the singular operator I wished to proceed with, and here’s why:
- Having substantial on-ground experience from spending extensive time on the safaris himself, he adeptly crafted a honeymoon package that perfectly suited my wife and me.
- He adeptly navigated our budget flexibilities and constraints to arrange an impressive array of delightful lodges and activities, focusing on maximising our day-to-day adventures, ensuring each day on safari and at the lodges offered a unique experience.
- A skilled photographer himself, James's comprehensive knowledge of various reserves and animal behaviours provided him with a distinct advantage in predicting animal locations and optimal times for photography, whether capturing sunrises, sunsets, or other moments.
- Our priority was to maximise game time and reserve experiences. James made certain our vehicle was ready, complete with packed hot breakfast boxes, for a prompt 6 AM departure every morning of the trip.
- Remarkably patient, he addressed all my queries, irrespective of whether they seemed 'silly' or insightful—from 'what to wear' at safaris, potential places to explore, to the animals we might encounter.
In summary, my wife and I enjoyed an extraordinary experience in Kenya, with Wild Portraits Safaris significantly enhancing the quality of that journey. We are eagerly anticipating more safaris and look forward to embarking on them with James and his team!
