Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival at JKIA airport to Ol Pejeta Conservancy

You will be met by our company representative and driver-guide at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) upon clearing customs. After a brief tour orientation, you will depart for Sweetwaters, a scenic 4-hour drive covering approximately 221 kilometers. Breathe in the fresh highland air as you pass through lush tea and coffee plantations, arriving at Maisha Sweetwaters Camp in time for lunch. After a short rest, you will head out for an afternoon game drive in Ol Pejeta Conservancy, East Africa’s largest black rhino sanctuary and home to the last two remaining northern white rhinos. The conservancy features a private waterhole and salt lick, offering unparalleled close-up wildlife encounters. With its rich mix of grass plains, acacia woodlands, and evergreen thickets, Ol Pejeta is also home to chimpanzees, lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, zebras, Cape buffalo, warthogs, and over 400 bird species. Dinner and overnight at Maisha Sweetwaters Camp.

After breakfast, depart for Aberdare National Park, a scenic destination dominated by the lush Aberdare ranges and forests. Originally known as Nyandarua due to its unique folded terrain, the park is famous for its stunning views and biodiversity. You will arrive at The Ark Lodge in time for lunch. In the afternoon, explore the park’s unique ecosystem which includes bamboo forests, rugged terrains, waterfalls like Magura and Chania Falls, deep ravines, and scenic moorlands including Kinangop and Ol Donyo Lesatima peaks. Aberdare is home to elephants, buffalos, lions, leopards, hyenas, Colobus monkeys, black rhinos, bushbucks, reedbucks, giant forest hogs, and the rare bongo antelope. The park also hosts over 250 bird species. Dinner and overnight at The Ark Lodge.

After breakfast, check out and descend into the Great Rift Valley toward Lake Naivasha. The drive takes about 2 hours, covering approximately 88 km. Along the way, stop at Thompson Falls for a breathtaking view of the cascading waters and the surrounding valley. Arrive at Lake Naivasha Crescent Camp in time for lunch. In the afternoon, enjoy a tranquil boat ride on the lake, offering the chance to spot wildlife such as hippos, giraffes, and buffalos along the shores. The boat will take you to Crescent Island, where you may choose to pay the entrance fee and enjoy a guided nature walk. The lake area is also known for its rich birdlife, including fish eagles, pelicans, herons, and kingfishers. Return to Lake Naivasha Crescent Camp for dinner and overnight stay.

After breakfast, depart for the world-renowned Masai Mara National Reserve, a 4-hour drive through scenic landscapes and flower farms. Arrive at AA Lodge Mara in time for lunch and a short rest. In the afternoon, embark on a thrilling game drive across the expansive savannah plains of the Mara, home to an incredible diversity of wildlife. The reserve is best known for the Great Wildebeest Migration, a seasonal spectacle where wildebeests cross the Mara River, pursued by predators. During the drive, keep an eye out for the “Big Five” and other game such as giraffes, zebras, and antelopes. Enjoy a stunning African sunset before returning to AA Lodge Mara for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast, set off for a full day of game drives in the majestic Masai Mara. The open savannah and grasslands provide excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. You’ll likely encounter elephants, lions, cheetahs, zebras, wildebeests, impalas, gazelles, warthogs, hyenas, and possibly even elusive leopards. The reserve is also home to hundreds of bird species, including ostriches, vultures, hornbills, and eagles. In the afternoon, you may opt for a cultural visit to a local Maasai village (entry fee payable directly), where you can learn about their unique traditions and way of life. Dinner and overnight stay at AA Lodge Mara.

After breakfast you will check out and leave for Nairobi with a stopover in Narok Town. Upon arriving  Nairobi you will be dropped at JKIA airport  to catch up with your flight.

Just went for 8 day safari with James and Wild Portraits Safaris...it was spot o (Read More)n perfect. Reasons 1.Clear communication and replies always comes very quickly on WhatsApp. 2. Very genuine with suggestions and doesn't do things as a job or formality. 3. James is very knowledgeable. 4. The enthusiasm and passion shown by James was just so infectious. 5. The planning of itinerary takes care of all the finer details. 6. They really take care of your focus and they don't try to sell anything you are not interested in. For example we skipped the village visit because we didn't see value in it. 7. Quite flexible and adjusts as things progress.

From the very beginning, Christine and Judith from Donwel Tours were highly atte (Read More)ntive to what we were looking to get from our first ever trip to Kenya, and Africa, for that matter. We wanted to cover a lot of ground, and were going from one agency to another before we found Donwel as most agents couldn't quite squeeze everything we wanted into our itinerary. Judith and Christine however made it all possible. Good quality stays everywhere, regular communication through the trip to ensure we were ok and were getting what we wanted. Special shoutout to Teeman, our driver who absolutely fantastic, drove safely and ensured our safety and comfort throughout the trip, regularly coordinating with Christine. This is an excellent team and we would highly recommend their services.
Everything was perfect.

I reached out to Wild Portraits via a safari service website that featured numer (Read More)ous tour operators. Among the competition, James stood out due to his exceptional patience, politeness, and genuine curiosity displayed during our initial phone calls. James swiftly emerged as the singular operator I wished to proceed with, and here’s why: - Having substantial on-ground experience from spending extensive time on the safaris himself, he adeptly crafted a honeymoon package that perfectly suited my wife and me. - He adeptly navigated our budget flexibilities and constraints to arrange an impressive array of delightful lodges and activities, focusing on maximising our day-to-day adventures, ensuring each day on safari and at the lodges offered a unique experience. - A skilled photographer himself, James's comprehensive knowledge of various reserves and animal behaviours provided him with a distinct advantage in predicting animal locations and optimal times for photography, whether capturing sunrises, sunsets, or other moments. - Our priority was to maximise game time and reserve experiences. James made certain our vehicle was ready, complete with packed hot breakfast boxes, for a prompt 6 AM departure every morning of the trip. - Remarkably patient, he addressed all my queries, irrespective of whether they seemed 'silly' or insightful—from 'what to wear' at safaris, potential places to explore, to the animals we might encounter. In summary, my wife and I enjoyed an extraordinary experience in Kenya, with Wild Portraits Safaris significantly enhancing the quality of that journey. We are eagerly anticipating more safaris and look forward to embarking on them with James and his team!
