Beaches in Coromandel

Named after Captain James Cook, the world-famous explorer, who was said to have stayed at the beach during his travels, Cook’s Beach is just a quick ride on the ferry from Whitianga.

Wainuiototo Bay also known as, New Chums Beach, has been notably described as being one of the best beaches in Coromandel, and all of New Zealand. However, unlike other beaches that have been known as one of the best beaches, it still has a “small-beach” vibe. It takes a half-hour walk from the nearest town of Whangapoua, but the walk is well worth it for the sheer beauty of the place.

50 km away from the Coromandel township lies Fletcher’s Bay, one of the most remote beaches in Coromandel. Located at the end of a dirt road, Fletcher’s Bay offers up some of the best views in all the North Island, of the Great Barrier Island and the Mercury Islands.

Easily one of the most beautiful beaches in Coromandel is the Cathedral Cove Beach. With its striking and imposing cliffs and the distinct view of the arch is an iconic view amongst New Zealand beaches.

One of the most spectacular beaches in Coromandel, Opoutere Beach is one of those unspoilt beaches that are still barely touched by commercial development. It still has the raw beauty of a beach that still exists as a local secret. It is around 11km from Whangamata and contains true uncontained, wild scenery. It also serves as a breeding ground for a variety of species of endemic birds!

One of the most remarkable beaches in Coromandel is Hot Water Beach. As a result of a naturally occurring hot spring that gets covered by the tide, when the tide goes back out, beach-goers can go bathe in the hot water of the natural hot spring, earning it the name Hot Water Beach. Hot Water Beach is located just off State Highway 2 near Whenuakite.

Hahei Beach is one of the most visually beautiful beaches in Coromandel. It begins at the border of one of a marine reserve, making it an ideal spot to go snorkelling. Hahei Beach is on the way to the famous Cathedral Cove Beach but is among the best beaches in Coromandel in its own right. Hahei beach is also notable for being the departure point for Kayaking tours going to Cathedral Cove.
