Christmas in Thekkady

We had a lovely stay at Monsoon Retreats over Christmas 2023. We were attracted to the beautiful jungle setting of the home stay and were delighted with the view through the large windows of our room. The balcony is a lovely place to sit and listen to the jungle sounds. The hot water was plentiful which is great in the cooler climate of Thekkady. Breakfast was served by our host's mother who was very lovely. Breakfast was tasty and filling. The host, Subeesh, had lots of interesting things to say about conservation and Thekkady. He was very responsive on WhatsApp and helped us arrange taxis and tuktuks. The home stay is around 15 mins tuktuk from Kumily which worked out at around 150 rupees. There are some local shops in walking distance if you need water or basic supplies. We really admire Subeesh's intention to make tourism more sustainable and wish him the best of luck in the future.

The steps to the cabin are very steep and not suitable for very young children or anyone with mobility issues The WiFi was patchy which was unfortunate when we wanted to call our families over Christmas. The roads around the home stay are very bumpy so don't travel with a full stomach!

Froggy forest heaven

The stay is in it's own little jungle all planted by the owner Subeesh, which is the perfect rest bite from the cities. Subeesh is very into his amphibians, reptiles and birds and is more than willing to take you spotting along with imparting his wisdom about said creatures. I truly have never met a man so passionate about what he's doing. Sulu (Subeesh's mother) made us feel right at home and was very caring. Telling us whatever we needed mumma would provide and provide she did with first rate food and chai along the way. A serene and welcoming spot in a country that can be abit hectic.

The power went out one night but we were in a storm so more than understandable. Subeesh gave each room a torch to navigate.

The resort is absolutely beautiful ! Its exactly as in the pics - full of greenery ! I had an impromptu and unpllanned trip and still had a wonderful time. Even just sitting outside in tge balcony of my tree house and listening to crickets and cicadas felt amazing ! The staff is amazing and sweet. Subish and his family treat you like a family guest and you feel absolutely at home! Planning to visit again !
