Very good

A hotel with a more authentic Vietnamese feel than most

Our room was large and very clean, with a big window facing an impressive green vertical mountainside of jungle-like vegetation. The hotel is located slightly off the main roads so there was no traffic noise to speak of. We suspect it caters primarily to a Vietnamese clientele, but we were not there during a Vietnamese holiday period so the entire town seemed a bit empty and we saw only a handful of other guests at this hotel. We had read reviews saying the breakfast was Asian style so were expecting noodles (which my husband loves) to be available for breakfast. Maybe due to the lack of Vietnamese guests, a menu of only Western breakfast options was presented to us. However, seeing my husband's disappointment, the staff went above and beyond to wake up early and make bun cha for us on our last morning when we had an early departure. We deeply appreciated this heartfelt gesture! Staff was also very helpful in suggesting tours and itineraries for us, and arranging a transfer to Halong Bay for us at the end of our stay. There were a few communication difficulties caused by the language gap, and for whatever reason our room did not get cleaned on a couple of days, but overall we could feel the staff's unflagging efforts to make our stay a happy one. We were there during a period of extreme heat but the A/C in our room kept us comfortable and we found the mattress firm and very comfortable. The breakfast room did not seem to have A/C (or it was not turned on) but this was fairly tolerable in the mornings; also no A/C seemed to be used in the lobby. Overall, we found this hotel to be a great value for the price, and it provided us with a more truly Vietnamese experience than what we found at other hotels we stayed at.

Excellent hospitality, great location, comfy bed!

Wish we could give the staff a higher score! Eddie and Dai went out of their way to make our stay special with their friendly hospitality. Dais cooking was superb. Jellyfish salad and his Bun Cha were a highlight of our trip. The hotel is up the hill on a backstreet so very quiet. We hired a hotel bike to get around the island, which is not that big and easy to explore. They can also organise tours for you. We did a day on Lan Ha and Ha Long bay which was pretty good. Eddie can tell you all the spots to go. The room had plenty of space to spread out and we had laundry done. The bed is really comfy and we enjoyed having a couch to sit on. Free fresh water available in the foyer too. There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance and if youre into street food, have seafood right on the port. So fresh. Our 4 nights in Cat Ba were some of the best on our Vietnam trip, partly to do with the friendly vibe of staying here. The pace here is relaxed and less touristy. We hope to come back.

There was nothing that would stop us from staying here again. We loved it. Better air con and shower pressure would be great, but not deal breakers for us.

Dirty hotel, dishonest staff

The room was not cleaned properly when we arrived. They offered an upgrade as compensation but this room was also dirty. The buns were full of trash, hair all over the floor and bed, stains on the sheets, etc. After complaining again, it was clear this was the cleaning standard of the hotel so being tired from our trip we decided to just accept it. The next day, whilst we were out on a tour, my booking was marked as a no show. We spoke to staff that evening and they said it was a mistake so I booked again for the following night. This time it was cancelled again during the night. They clearly didnt want me to write a bad review and do this whenever there are complaints. I had to request a review form off booking.com support to write this. I would not trust the review score at all. This was one of the worst hotels I have stayed at in Vietnam.
