Bangalore to Chikmagalur

Several buses including AC and non AC seater and sleeper buses operate on the route from Bangalore to Chikmagalur: the 250 kilometres being traversed within 6 hours. Located at a distance of about 250 kilometres from Bangalore via road, Chikmagalur is a perfect getaway destination. Traversing these distances via the NH75 is the fastest and the most convenient option for a traveller. Flanked by the scenic Western Ghats, the best time to visit this destination is during September to March; the cascading waterfalls during the monsoons serve as the perfect backdrop for a family photograph.

Route 1: Via the NH75 

240 kilometres are traversed within 4 hours assuming that one encounters no traffic during the journey.

From Bangalore to Yediyur to Channarayapatna to Hassan to Belur and to Chikmagalur.

Route 2: Via the NH73 

250 kilometres or so are commuted within 5 hours subject to traffic conditions. 

From Bangalore to Kunigal to Yediyur to Dasarighatta to Arsikere and to Chikmagalur.

Route 3: Via the NH48

Opt for this route only if traffic congestion is expected on the other two routes. With a distance of about 300 kilometres, one can traverse the distance within 6 hours.  

From Bangalore to Tumkur to Sira to Hiriyur to Ajjampur to Kadur and to Chikmagalur.

Road Conditions

Flanked by the scenic Western Ghats on both sides of the road, one is subject to picturesque views along the way wherein one can expect a relatively comfortable journey. In terms of traffic, the roads do not face traffic congestion; however, during the monsoons, an uprooted tree may cause traffic disruptions.

Eating Options on the Way

Majority of the route is via the national highway (NH 48) which means that one can find restaurants at regular intervals. Some good options include that of ‘Mayura’ located in Bellur or ‘Athithi’ and ‘Kamat Upachar’ in Udyapura. Another good restaurant in terms of cleanliness and quality of food is the Suvarna Regency (Hassan).

Kadur provides the nearest rail link from Chikmagalur and is about 38 kms away from Bangalore. Once you de-board the train at Kadur station, you can continue your onward journey to Chikmagalur via a taxi or bus which will take about 50 minutes to traverse the distance.

There is no direct flight connectivity from Bangalore to Chikmagalur. However, one can take a flight to Mangalore (about 110 kilometres from Chikmagalur) and then the onward journey can be made via a prepaid taxi and will take about 3 hours to commute.
