Kakdwip, West Bengal Overview

Kakdwip is a city in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. The place finds a special mention in the history of the state as it was here that the peasant movement during Tehbaga movement in 1946 centred around. While it is a historically significant place, the city, located on the Ganges delta, has many other exciting places in store for a tourist: Henry island, Sagar island, Frederick island, Fraserganj island etc.

The whole district of South 24 Parganas is located on the deltaic region. There are many beaches and islands here. Henry island is one. It is a pristine white sand beach, located near Bakkhali in South 24 Parganas. Many red crabs can be found here—birds like whistling ducks, kingfisher, black-rumpled flame back etc.

Named after a British surveyor, the Henry island is regarded as the best among Mandarmani, Digha, Tajpur, Puri and Bakkhali beaches. The beaches in the district form the Ganga-Brahmaputra Delta region.  There is also a watchtower near the beach, from where one can get a beautiful view of the beach and the mangrove forests. From here, one can also visit the Bakkhali beach and the adjoining crocodile and deer parks.
