Located on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, Selangor, also referred to as Darul Ehsan, is the most developed Malaysian state. The state houses many protected areas to safeguard the biodiversity and wildlife along with being home to some notable beaches. Shah Alam, the state capital is home to the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Mosque which is adorned with beautiful architecture and I-City which is a commercial hub. There are thrilling hiking opportunities available at the Bukit Tabur which is a long quartz ridge that has at its disposal awe-inspiring views of the state. 

Many eco forests are situated in Selangor namely Taman Rimba Templer, Taman Rimba Ampang, Taman Rimba Komanwel, Sungai Tekala, Kanching, Gunung Nuang, Gabai Waterfall, Sungai Chongkak, Sungai Tua and Sungai Sendat. A famous Formula 1 car racing track where Formula One Malaysian Grand Prix was held in the past is also present in Selangor.

The National Zoo of Malaysia, Shah Alam Gallery, Crab Island and Firefly Sanctuary are some other worth visiting attractions in Selangor. It is also a haven for massage and spa lovers.

Festivals in Selangor

Selangor celebrates a lot of festivals with great enthusiasm throughout the year namely Thaipusam, the Chinese New Year, Maulidur Rasul, May Wesak Day and Mooncake Festival.
  • In January – February, the Hindus celebrate Thaipusam on the occasion of Lord Murugan’s birthday. The worshippers carry kavadis as a mark of respect to the lord and a chariot procession is organized.
  • The Chinese New Year is a 15-day festival celebrated in the month of January – February by the Chinese community.
  • Maulidur Rasul is celebrated in the month of March to commemorate the birthday of Prophet Muhammad. Prayer meetings and religious festivals are conducted in honour of the prophet and to pay tribute to him.
  • Selangor Water Festival takes place in April in which kayaking, underwater treasure hunts, boat racing, catch the duck game and sandcastle building contests are organized.
  • On Wesak Day, held in May, the birth, enlightenment and death of Lord Buddha are celebrated by lighting up joss sticks and candles and offering flowers.
  • In September, Mooncake Festival is held to celebrate the victory of Chinese over the Mongol Yuan Dynasty. Delicious mooncakes are prepared in distinguished flavours during this time.
  • The end of Ramadan is marked by the celebration of the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festival in which special delicacies are made.
  • In December, New Year and Christmas are celebrated.
