Often referred to as 'mini-Switzerland of India', Khajjiar is a small town located close (20km) to Dalhousie and is great for a day or overnight trip. Khajjiar is known for its picture perfect grassy meadows.There is the Khajjiar Lake in the middle of the meadow and you could enjoy the scenery by camping or take part in some of the adventure sports including paragliding, zorbing, and horse-riding.

Located at an altitude of 6,500 feet, Khajjiar is also known for its nine-hole golf course which is nestled in the midst of lush greenery and a breathtaking landscape. However, the way to Khajjiar can be closed sometimes during winters because of heavy snowfall. The hill town is also the most sought after destination for workations as there are plenty of Homestays, some offering mesmerising views of the Kailash Parbat. Visit Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary on your way from Dalhousie to Khajjiar.

The mesmerizing beauty of this place has greatly influenced and inspired many kingdoms throughout the years, including the Rajputs and Mughals. The Khajji Nag temple was built in the 12th century and has been attracting devotees ever since.

Mini Switzerland

Due to its topographical resemblance with Switzerland, Khajjiar is ofter called the' Mini Switzerland' of India. This saucer shaped green meadow is engulfed by Deodar trees and has a lake in the middle. On July 7, 1992, Khajjiar was called the 'mini Switzerland' by the then Vice-Counsellor and Head of the Chancery of Switzerland in India, Willy Blazer. He also put a sign board which showed the distance between Khajjiar and Swiss capital-Bern. He took a stone from Khajjiar to be installed in the stone collage around the Swiss Parliament to constantly remind people of Khajjiar as the 'Mini Switzerland'.

Day 1- Proceed to Khajjiar from Dalhousie. Enroute visit the Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary. Reach Khajjiar and visit the famous Khajjiar lake and the lush green ground. Visit the Golden Devi temple next.
Day 2- Visit the famous Khajji Nag temple, known to be one of the holiest temples of Himachal Pradesh. Have lunch and head back to Dalhousie.

The trek is approx 8 and a half km long and moderately difficult. It is clean and well marked, so it shouldn't be much of a problem.

Khajjiar has been one of my favorite destinations since I stepped among the clouds there for the very first time. I stood there in the middle of this huge ground and all I could see were clouds and c (Read More)louds only. As I mentioned, the ground is very massive which makes it a perfect picnic spot. You can take a long walk, get a horse ride, eat snacks from the local vendors there and spend the whole day having the time of your life. I would recommend it for everyone as I do think that experiencing this is a must at least once in a lifetime.
