The Applewood Lodge

Dreadful. I have scored the property and host very low, following our experience on the second night of a two night stay. On returning on the second evening we found the smoke detector in one of the bedrooms was emitting a loud, shrill bleep every 30 seconds. We contacted the host who contacted her electrician. He advised that the faulty smoke detector was mains operated and could not be disconnected as it was linked to the other smoke detectors. As he didn't offer a 24 emergency service, he would be unable to fix it until the morning. Instead of using a different electrician or arranging alternative accommodation, the host offered earplugs. Smoke detectors are designed to wake the heaviest of sleepers, with or without earplugs, so would have been ineffective. I have since checked and there are several electricians in the area offering a 24 hour service. We dragged the beds from the bedroom to the adjoining lounge/dining room/ kitchen, and the host attempted to block the gap under the door, but it made very little difference to the noise. Clearly this host is unable to cope with any problems arising in the lodge. The 2 night stay cost 450. The host has refused to make any refund.
