It is believed that people may have lived in Kenya some 2 million years ago. Arabian men had established a few settlements along the coastal areas. This coastal line came under the Portuguese influence during the 1500s. Kenya's biggest ethnic group, Kikuyu, came here only around the start of the 18th century. Kenya was a British protectorate in 1890 and in 1920, it became a colony. Kenyan history is incomplete without mentioning the Mau Mau movement, which came as a bold expression of rebellion in those times.

What is unique about culture of Kenya?

Kenyan culture is rich and varied. A lot of tribes co-exist in this country, most of them being traditionally African groups. These communities are known to be warm and welcoming. Guests are treated with utmost respect by Kenyan families, with a lot of that respect being given to the elderly. Christianity is the predominant religion here, followed by Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism. Swahili and English are the official languages of Kenya.

Prior to 2013, Kenya was divided into 8 provinces. With the new Constitution, the provinces gave way to a total of 46 districts. They are commonly classified into City, Municipality, Town and Country. However, the old provinces of Kenya were the Central province, the Coast, the Eastern province, Nairobi, the North Eastern province, Nyanza, the Rift Valley and the Western province.
